Default Tranny fitment...

I have a 1JZ SC300 with a 5 spd and was thinking about swapping it for a 6 spd supra tranny. Will that tranny fit on the 1JZ motor? What will I need to make it work or will it even be worth my time and money? Just pondering on something different.

nice avatar! Yes it will work, but it's not jut a tranny swap if you want to go V160, you need to change a few things along with it. If you're just asking about whether it will bolt on to your engine, the answer is yes, will that be it for the swap, no.

What 5spd are running? If you have an R154 in there I wouldn't swap it out. In order to make the Getrag fit you need to modify the transmission tunnel along with changing your driveshaft and swapping out the rear end to one with the proper gearing. All in all with all the parts you'd be looking at around 4K to do a 6spd swap.

Try 6k- don't forget about a different clutch, different shifter tower, there's a lot involved. 7k is more realistic

its more worth it to sell your 1JZ + 5speed as a whole swap for someone else and pick up a 2jz + 6spd swap which you can get for around 5-6k. basically you can upgrade to a 2jz+v160 for about the same you would pay for just the v160.

I agree with this. The price of getting a full 2JZ-GTE swap with a V161 is such a better deal.

well idk what the tranny is currently in it. how do i find out which one it is?
ClearP nice avatar to you too buddy.
i understand how it would be easier to do the 2jzgte 6 spd swap rather than the tranny swap for the 1jz.
thanks for the help guys

Did you buy the car with the motor swapped in already or did you do the swap afterwards? Was the car originally a manual car? Check the door sticker for W58 and it will tell you if it was an original manual car.

you can never know these days with sc's the best way to do it is to get under there and check it out. the r154 is a larger transmission. check for pics online.

Get under the car if you have 2 inspection plates, left and right of the Bellhousing!! and then if you see where the slave cylinder pushes on the fork W/O removing the inspection plates.
The V160 will bolt right up to the 1JZ and you don't have to touch the tunel for clearance.
You will need a custum DS, you can do the whole swap for ~5K if you do the labor yourself.

I would just sell the 1JZ swap and hopefully you have an R154 behind it, and get the full 2JZ GTE V160 swap.
If you are going for Big power down the road get the V160 then Transmission will be the last thing to worry about, if you have the money get the V160.

The W58 might as well have been made out of paper. Some guys have no issues with it in the 350-400HP range. While others blow them up. They key to longevity on a W58 would be to not bang on it like some guys do. The R154 is a stronger motor and has been known to hold upwards of 700 HP.
