Default rusty rotors

I jus put my cross-drilled and slotted rotors on any i must admit they look pretty damn good. the only problem is that it's been raining a lot around here the last couple of days and i'm sure all of u know that these things tend to rust when water dries on them anyways i was watchin speed vision awhile back and there was this little segment they did about car care and one of the things they talked about was putting some kind of chemical on your rotors to make them resistant to water. Kinda like rainX i guess you could say. It seemed like a useful bit of info but i forgot what they used. does anyone know what it could be or does anyone else have a fix for this problem??? any input would be useful.

Hey Khang,

FINALLY! You've installed them! I'm glad you like them. The rust that you see will be gone once you take your car for a spin. It'll look good as new once you start braking on it.

Post some pictures of your ride if you can, i'm dying to see it. If you can send the pictures to Tony@lexussc400.com

hey tony.. yeah i put them on and i love them more than the air in my lungs man.. they work awesome but the part of the rotors that i'm talking about is the part that doesn't make contact w/ the brake pads so they stay rusted. but anyways they work hella good. and i know a few people that were looking for rotors as well so i gave them ur website. I think one wanted one's for an ls400 and my buddy sam wants some for his 300zx so i told them to go to you. i'll get on those pics asap. i could have done it today but i'm lazy.

I painted my cross drilled rotors. Painted everything but the surface that the pads touch. I used 1200 degree engine paint and then baked them in my grill for 20 minutes to make sure they were dry. It has been 8 months now and my rotors look nearly rust free....and I live in Chicago!

Hey Khang and Michael, glad that you both like your rotors. What made you pick that type, and not a different (i.e. dimpled, or slotted only)? Did the fact that they can crack, and are more prone to break around the cross drilled part affect both of your decisions'?
I'm considering new rotors (even though you wouldn't be able to see them on my car) and was just curious on the performance of the rotors (are they louder, eat more of the brake pad, cause more/less dust)?

Thanks in advance,

John

P.S. Have to bring State Farm to court to get $ they owe me from wreck. Buncha *****^s!!!!

Kind of off topic, but I heard that if you have squeaky brakes you can spray silicone on the rotors and the squeaks will go away??? Any truth in this?

I painted them Silver/aluminum finish. I taped off the braking surface and painted everything else, including between the 2 discs itself. I don't have any pics, for they are on my car now, so all you'll see is the front surface. Use high temperature paint 1200 - 1800 degree only. Black or silver would be my recommendation. It is quite easy and my rotors stood up to a Chicago winter just fine. I'll take some pics next time I am in there.

Well.....I choose cross drilled so that they would cool faster and elimate brake fade, which they do. The slotts were an extra bonus, or at least I thought so at the time. The slotts make moderate to heavy braking loud and annoying. It almost sounds like they are grinding. I really dislike this. So, I would recommend cross drilled rotors and get a brand that is good quality, with properly counter-sinked holes. Some even come coated of plated so they wont rust. There is definately a performance difference. I can stop on a dime everytime, but the cost of this for me is noise. I took the chance and am not worring about them cracking. In fact I was more worried about them warping. I was told that you can not turn cross drilled or slotted rotors. You can just not a lot. So I had them Thermocycled (heated and cooled to extreme temperatures). This process strengthened the metal and lowered the probabilities of warping, and may be cracking. As far as dust, I chose ceramic brake pads. They are really dust free and quiet, they never squeek. They are really a strong pad. I think they would ware down the rotor before the pad. I hope this helps.

i got them cuz i thought they would complement my rims nicely (which they do) and b/c my rotors were very warped and needed to be replaced anyway. I'm not concerned about them cracking cuz i dont do much hard braking. When i replace the rotors i went to lexus and bought some oem pads and the squealing sound from braking stop. Overall brake performance has improved a lot. So far i think the rotors are the best thing i've bought in a long time but only time can tell. If i have any problems then i'll let u know but so far it seems to do the job nicely.

Do your brakes make noise? A grinding like sound or anything similar. HOw do they compare to when you first got your car?

nope.. my brakes are as quiet as a dog with a muzzle on. As far as comparing them to when i first got the car i think they are the same if not better but my car wasn't exactly new when i got it so maybe it's not as good as it was when it first rolled off the assembly line.
