Default In Dash GPS question - size does matter

I've been looking at a bunch of in dash GPS's. The things are awesome these days, basically pretty big screens that'll do touch screen GPS, play DVD's, play stuff from a USB stick, play stuff from an SD card, or play the radio and also have an input for auxilary and an input for a backup camera.

Problem is, they're pretty big. I've never taken the dash off so I'm not sure how much room there is behind the stock stereo. I looked around here in some threads but I couldn't seem to find a definitive word. Has anyone had problems installing double din GPS's or video screens? Or even the single din foldouts? Are there any length issues I should be concerned about?

Big as in a double din? Bigger then the stock radio?

You didn't search hard enough, double dins have no problem fitting in your car.

I just had to deal with this a little while ago. I have an Eclipse AVN7000 (1DIN foldout) which is listed as having a depth of 6.5" and it's definitely pretty tight back there. I had to struggle w/ the wiring behind the unit for a while, I was able to get it to fit eventually... so I would say you're safe w/ a unit w/ a listed depth of 6.5". There's actually a little bit more room lower down so I would assume a 2DIN should be no different.

The length issue was the one I was concerned about. A lot of the GPS units are 7" and I figured that might be too big.

I'm going to probably have someone wire it up for me, so hopefully a pro will have some techniques tools or abilities to get it wired up well. I guess I'll shoot for 6.5" or less.

Thanks Potato, die Formosa.

I have a 7" Kenwood in mine, fits fine and replaces the stock stereo fine. Your just going to need a Metra DD kit to make the install look CLEAN...

I have a pioneer premier f90bt but there is still a gap at the bottom. So with that metra dash kit it should look flush?

Seems like your question was not very clear, but either way, I've never heard of someone not being able to fit double din in their SC's, so I guess I did answer your questions? hehe

7" or 6.5" doesn't make much of a difference I think, I've had both and the only difference I can tell is the screen is bigger, the unit itself is not really deeper. Either way, they fit in my car.

when i did my single DIN kit, i used a trashbag tie to kinda keep all the un-used wires from the factory headunit together and tucked them away. theres plenty of room back there.

LOL when you see a 7" gps unit, they are talking about the screen size not how deep it sinks into the dash. most aftermarket units sit deeper, and many cars you even have to cut some more room in the back of the dash, this one doesnt seem like it would have issues
