Jetta or Sc300: NEED HELP!
Alright, its down to this.
Do I keep my automatic 2000 Jetta VR6, or do I sell it and get a 8 to 10 year old SC300? Is it worth it? I'm really torn here. It will be my daily driver.
Please help,
Matt

No disrespect to VWs, but after about five or more years, they become rattle boxes. I used to work for a small dotcom company where everyone there was obsessed with VWs. Back then I didn't have a car so I commuted with a couple of them. Their cars all rattled tremendously, upon ignition, at idle, and on the freeway as well. Old bimmers are the same, BTW. Maybe they've improved their 2000 models and by 2005 they'll be smooth, who knows? But personally I would go with what you know. 12 year old Lexuses are smoother than brand new Jettas. BTW, two of my friends drive black Jettas. One's a 1999 Bora imported from Germany and one's a 2000 VR6. I've ridden in the Bora many many times and it's a nice car, but not as smooth as my '95 Lexus.
My grandmother had a 1991 ES250 (wrecked), my uncle has a 1994 ES300, my aunt has a 1997 ES300, another rich uncle has a 1994 LS400 and a 2002 SC430---all these cars run beautifully to this day. So does mine
So basically you know my opinion, go for the SC300 and sell your Jetta while the resell value is still good.

I have a SC
brother has an ES

lexus do hold their quaility
nothing ever goes wrong with either of them
they all run just as smooth as they did when they were bought
other than normal wear and tear that is expected
lexus is less than i would expect.....they really do hold up really
well to this day

Think slogans:
"Drivers wanted."
or
"The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection"
Hmm. When all else fails, check sex appeal. Suppose you are pulling up for that job interview. What looks like you are an asset for the future, someone they want on the team. What would a girl choose if side by side. Mine is 10 years old, and I get compliments everywere, from everyone. I get them from car guys that know that its fast, but luxurious, and I really get them from girls. It's my daily driver as well, which sucks because I need more utility.

Does anyone else experience the phenomenon that I so affectionately coin the "Jetta Rule"?
Jetta Rule: Only gorgeous girls are allowed to buy Jettas therefore all the Jettas on the road (driven by girls) are driven by hot girls.
I personally know six beautiful women that all drive Jettas, but I've seen so many more instances on the road. The rule has only failed me once, and trust me I take notice of every Jetta I pass.

Yes I have experienced that phenomenon.
NO I HAVE NEVER LICKED MY DOOR HANDLE
Chicks love Jetta’s. Virtually every woman I know (that doesn’t know that much about cars) would love to own mine. However, thus far it has not proven to be a chick magnet.
I’m sure the SC300 would be better in that department (I would be the only guy in Rochester NY to own one). I just hope there is someone around who knows their engines.
Well I’m pretty sold guys. Thanks a lot. I just have 2 questions.
1. Is there a cap on miles that I shouldn’t go over, like 130k or something like that?
2. Know anybody selling one in or around NY state?
Thanks again,
Matt

I've had some experience with Jettas,by the time you get them working right(exhaust,Bilsteins)something always happens.
The motor mounts are crap,as are the final drives in the tranny, and when these things begin to fail, that's when these cars show their true colors.
I have always known that Toyotas were the hit as far as reliability, but I could never live with one of those interiors on the older cars.
As far as finding one,I guess I would tend to stay away from some extreme hi-mile cars, but even the higher mileage cars can be alright depending on the condition and how well they were maintained mechanically.I'd look for a car with a history at a dealer, that way you know what's been done to it,then take it to a good mechanic if you know of one, otherwise to the dealer.

if you do end up going to a Lexus dealer to have the car checked.. not all know what there talking about. so you may not want to believe everything they tell you ... a few others have has similar experience, depends on the lex dealer though.
You know, there is a BIG difference in a girl liking and wanting your car, and a girl wanting a RIDE in your car. I never get any "I want you car" jabs from anyone but my buddies, but I get requests for a ride daily.
Yes, SC300 is not bad of a chick magnet. A have driven a good number of ladies in my car. First thing they said is "This is a very nice car," and then I say "Thanks." That's when some of them get pissed. Honestly, WTF do they want me to say?
