Default What's the difference in fart cans?

I'm sorry, I come from a muscle car background, so that's what I call 'em.

What's the difference, really? I mean, we all know Blitz Nur Specs sound amazing on a 1UZ, but what really sets those particular mufflers apart from every other one on the market as far as performance/function? Look at cross-sections of mufflers like Flowmaster, Dynomax, Magnaflow, etc., and you'll see a wide variety of internal designs. The "fart can", however, is pretty much a large tube with a small tube on the end. Is there really that much variation in the available selection, or is it all just marketing?

I think most fart cans are a glasspack, straight through design. Usually with an 8in tip

flowmasters are chambered, meaning they have lots of baffles to reduce sound, this means they are barely an improvement over stock in terms of performance but are much louder

Dynomax and Magnaflow are a straight through design, internally they are similar to glasspacks except that the inside is smooth and they usually have a packing that won't be blown out over time. These are the "clealnest sounding" mufflers, as well as the best performance wise.

I really like Dynomax because you can buy a SS muffler for 90$ on summit, 60$ for the non SS. That's really a bargain, which is why I reccomend them to anyone looking for max power withot being too loud. I used 2 2.5in double offset mufflers on my 78 Z28 and despite the big cam, and 6.7L of displacement it is just a slight rumble while cruisng, Its actually very quiet at idle, but when I get on it I can be heard from blocks away

there really is not much difference in the mufflers. mostly the pipping, and sizing of it.

a fart can could be a cheap exhaust system or tip only to make the car louder. people who need attention like fart cans.
