Oh and to answer your question. More traction is better since you can go around sharp turns faster without losing control.
I have 255's and they keep traction with my 1jz. You should get some better quality tires.

You might get more grip but the front end will be washing out. Handling will be for ****

I'm running work vs-xx rims, 19x8.5 in the front and 19x9.5 in the rear. The correct size is 275 in the rear and yet i am running 285s. Thats a +1 tire size.

So i am advocating doing the exact same thing you are doing. So excuse me if i am missing your point.
Dude there is no "single correct size." You should always use tires that have a recommended rim width that matches yours. There is none of this 265 is too small, 285, is too big, and 275 is just right. If the tire is OK for your rim width then you can use it, if not you do so at your own risk.

OneJay meant that there is no need for 285's on the back of an N/A 2jz, they oe only slowing you down. thats his point

You are. You must have crappy tires if you are losing traction on a 170whp engine on 285's when I'm keeping traction on a 280whp engine with 255's.

and what are you talking about 170rwhp? Stock 2jz-ge is 225hp so a "realistic" loss of 8-12 percent for my manual would be 207-198 rwhp.
average manual trans loss is 15% but that doesn't really matter, what matters is that apparently you spin a 285 series tire with an N/A 2jz. Thats incredible, what do you have an intercooler sprayer spraying your tires so that you can spin them? Or do you mean when you dump your clutch at 6k rpm?

Ok let me put this in perspective for you, my roomate has a 430hp sr running 18 x 10's with a 285/35 and he barely spins rolling in 2nd from a 15mph roll. You DO NOT spin those 285's, even if your tires had a 400 tread ware running 50psi

Maybe they're made out of plastic? Thats the only reasonable explanation I can think of.

you are comparing the irrelevant. A 285 tire will give you better handling then a 265 tire.
No theres not only 1 tires size. Were did you read this.

You will be fine with a 235/35 and 265/30, but its all up to you. With those offset you can pick from any of the tire sizes that were recommended.

Look at Hamann's page

http://www.hamann-motorsport.de/348.0.html?&L=1

They are running 235 tires on a 8.5 wheel. They are one of the most respected tuning companies so they must have chosen 235 wide wheel on a 8.5 wheel for a reason? And that reason is both function and aesthetics?

Same with AC Schnitzer

http://www.ac-schnitzer.de/en/bmw-cars/wheel-selector/

235 and 265 on a 8.5 / 9.5 wheel for their E46 M3s

Also take into account loss of compression over the many many years your engine has been running. Mine made 179 to the wheels with intake and exhaust. With those mods I'm guessing I gained maybe 5hp. So I guess I should have said 174whp before. My bad dude. I totally understated the power of the stock SC!!!

back to topic: for a 9.5 rim you can run anywhere between a 255-285. with running 19's ya need to consider the supra TT drop and rolling fenders... it's not gonna make a "world" of difference if your stock because well it's not like a 2jz-ge motor is that beastly... if your na-t and gte then it would be a helpful consideration but if you had those motors i think people wouldnt be whining about tires sizes now would we?

i do enjoy the arguments tho... but just to settle this dispute, you can spin a 285 tire with a stock 2jz-ge motor... in the rain of course. =) .... i mean my tail end was all over the place with a stock motor and 275 rear tires .... of course, that was in the rain on a bald a/s supra tire
