If I'm understanding this right, the a/c won't just cut off on its own when it reaches whatever temp. It stays on to maintain the temp. Can you not just push the button and turn it off?

I think the off button will suffice............

anyway, the a/c system hardly wastes gas, that's just an old wives tale

yes i push the buttom and turn it off, but the thing is thats that the car needs to do that by itself.....my other car is a 2000 mitsubishi eclipse gt , and when i put the a/c on in low or wheatever you can hear or feel when the a / c stops...

I think it must have something wrong ... is not normal to the a/c compressor to stay on for so long....for example im from tampa..how about a trip to miami with the a/c on....is not normal to the a/c coompresor to stay on 4 hour without stopping...that can burn the coompresor......I think that the automatic coompressor control unit is bad....
