A big "heads up" to any high mileage, daily driver SC owners, particularly in Northern climes, where road salt is an issue. Two weeks ago today, I noticed a puddle under my SC400, in front of the driver side wheel well. It was a gasoline leak caused by the corrision and rupture of the metal filter housing which is attached to the frame. It was a steady drip which increased to a stream when the car was running, with pressure in the fuel system.
As it was a long weekend in Canada, I spent three days catching gasoline in an oil drain pan and emptying it into a gasoline can. On the following Tuesday, I had it floated to my mechanic, as I didn't want to risk fire from gasoline running onto the exhaust system. The replacement unit was $ 65 from the dealer, not very expensive in relation to the possible fire hazard if this happened on the road.

Is the 400's fuel filter up front?

Mine is in the back right by the driver side rear wheel well, cleanly marked TOYOTA and then under it: FUEL FILTER.

Kind of obvious eh?

 

Neglected to mention, rear wheel well, same location as the SC300. It caught me by surprise as there is no service recommendation.

It should be replaced every 12,000 miles, i recommend more like every 8,000 for optimal performance/mileage. Esp. if you dont use good fuel.

doing mine tonight, one the way home car just very slowly died, 15 min later started back up then died again 1 block before making it home. going look over a few things thought, but doubt it's been done.

Your right, it should be, but be careful when you loosen those brass connectors on both sides of the fuel filter. Dont strip it out! I replaced mine some ago, and I thought it was on the left rear side of the car, just in front of the left rear tire, and NOT the right side.. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I have a 400.

 

Yes right in front of the drivers rear tire very easy to get to
