SC300 New Front Speakers- Which One
Hi Everyone:
My 94 SC300 is in the shop for repairs. They took off the doors to paint them and thus took off the inside door panels. I now have access to the speakers and am considering replacing the existing pioneer 4" and tweeter. Thus, I would like to ask a few questions.
What is a good replacement for the 4" that costs less than $100 a pair?
Is this a midrange only because there is a tweeter.
I need to buy this in the next 2 days - thus no mail order.
I heard from previous threads that MB Quart and Dyna Audio are good but do they cost less than a fortune.
At $100 a pair would I notice any difference from the Pioneer?
Could these speakers be found locally at Circuit City or Good Guys?
Thank you for any advice on this.
Rick

Rick, virtually any aftermarket speaker will give an improvement over the OE paper cone 4". Yes, it is a midrange only, so you'll actually want a component set (w/ tweeter and x-over) to replace the original speakers, don't use a coax. You may be able to find a set for $100, but it definitely won't be at all close to high-end. If money is tight right now, save up and spend a little more, you'll get a lot more for your money. The door panels come off easily, you don't have to do it now, wait until you can do it right, and you'll never have to do it again. I recommend modifying/baffling the OE plastic enclosures so you can use a 5.4" or 6.5" spkr, far better midbass. Dynaudio is a fantastic speaker, MB Quart is good, their tweeters have a rep for not being the best, also Focal, Diamond Audio, Velodyne, etc. If you don't want to go that high end, try JL Evolution, Alpine, Infinity, etc.

I'm partial to Boston Acoustic ProSeries speakers, though my last set were JL Evolution XRs and those were cool too. Definitely go with component speakers and if $100 is all you got to spend on them, save up for better speakers. It'll be worth it. $300 a pair is a good place to start. Mine were something like $500 a pair, which is by no means high-end, but they do sound great! If you want to do it right, don't rush and squeeze this project into a two-day window for convenience sake.
I agree on it, if you can, spend more time and save $$ for better speakers. But I'm not saying $100 speakers from Circuit City or Good Guys are bad. Since your time is limited, go listen to those speakers(component set is recommended) and if you like them, why not install on your sc.
I dont think you can find MB Quart or Dyna Audio at circuit city.

maybe you could watch them put your door panels back on .. that way you can wait and get some better speakers... its pretty easy to hear the difference in sound between 100$ speakers and 300$ .. well to me.. good luck
