Default Gauge cluster options

I just recently acquired a 92 SC300 and both the speedo needle and the tach needle have no illumination. The Speedo doesn't work at all, just tacho.

Can I swap a cluster from 92-97 or does it have to be in a certain age bracket for me to use in the 92.

thanks!

-J

EDIT:

I believe the car might have traction control as well....does this matter?

Hey OLT,

Thanks for the welcome. I have searched and I'm familiar with forum etiquette and was unable to find something that fully answered the questions...hence this thread.

Being that you run/work for Lextech, do you have any info or threads in mind to contribute? I'm pretty versed in electronics as I've been building Megasquirt units and installing them on various platforms for something like 4+ years now. I pulled the factory cluster apart last night to look for burnt traces or anything out of the ordinary and wasn't able to find anything that jumped out.

I'm assuming the needles are LED lighting, as those are dead as well. When I pulled the needles off, I saw the two connections for the LED attached to the motor I presume...anode/cathode connections. Are the LEDs inside the actual needle? If that's the case, perhaps I'll just change them and order replacements from Mouser or similar....

Thanks!

EDIT:

OLT,

I know you replace lighting, but do you offer repair services as well?

No, but it does have the "TRAC" ECU....don't know what its purpose is yet.

from what i have read all clusters from 92-96 are interchangeable. But once you get up to the 97+ cars they change and will not work unless you rewire the underdash harness. I might be trying this pretty soon well see but money is tight right now... GL

Where have you read this? I swapped in a 94 cluster from an Auto and I loose RPM. It even happens if i just take the PCB from the Auto cluster and put it in my manual one......so I know its not a stepper motor issue.

As far as I know, the 92-96 are interchangeable. You may have to do more digging in the search fields though. As for the needles being dead, save yourself some headache and just jump on the Feb group buy for backlighting and needles (assuming you fix the speedo or source another cluster)

For your 92 sc300, 92-94 sc300 clusters are direct replacements. Other years you may need some other parts/mods.
