How long can I possibly keep this dang car?

I've had my SC for over 6 years now. The driveline is still strong and solid as a rock @ 225k miles. The rest however..... all the small things are bothering me. Time to replace the door seals, which I have from my parts car so they are used, but low miles. Fine, got that covered. Time to replace the LCA bushings, which I have Daizens in the closet brand new so....... fine got that covered. Time to replace the starter which is dragging lately which I have one on my spare engine so .......... fine got that, but what a PITA to put a used part on.... I think I'll buy a new one so I never have to do it again.
I can tell my little SC is showing her age. The little things are starting to mount up and even though I stripped a parts car 3 yrs ago and have everything I need to replace the parts with, they are still just lower mileage used parts. We have been in the peak of finding used parts for these cars for the last 5 years, but the glory days of scavenging used SC parts are coming to an end as these cars approach the 20 year old mark. Used parts will be antique used parts in the next few years and be no better than what we already have on the car. As the years mount, inevitably the used parts years will mount equally and render them that many years older than they are today. This age of plentiful parts still in their "fresh" days is soon to come to an end. What is sitting in the junkyards today that is 14 years old will be 17 years old in a few years and that much more worn or brittle or aged. Sure Gazi's scrap parts are "only" ten to thirteen years old today, but they'll be 15 yrs old or more in a couple years and the age will be critical to how well they are holding up.
This begs the question, as the 1st gen SC's golden years become twilight years......... How long will you hold on? When used parts come close to being 20 years old in the junkyards and they diminish their numbers of useable good parts that stood the time and when the cars you drive have that many more things aging and failing..... How long will you hold on?
I asked myself this recently and I just can't stand to think of getting rid of something that I've had for over half a decade. I really do LOVE this car, but I have to be reasonable. Just when I actually considered putting it up for sale, I just closed a deal to re-acquire Lextech from Brandon (kinda like Steve Jobs coming back to Apple) so I can rebuild my brain child of 6 years ago into a new force and push into 2009 with a vengeance. So NOW I can't sell the dang thing, I need it for R&D.
I actually did consider it though. I'm glad it worked out this way however. I'm curious though for others who are part of our community with these aging vehicles....

Heh, well I say when you get a chance to grab a part that we call a high failure part (common issue) for a deal then go ahead and set it back even if you don't need it YET. in two more years the parts on the junk cars today we strip will have two more years of wear and age on them so if you can score a deal...... I do believe we are in the change over years of going from plentiful parts to hoarding parts before they get too old to resell.

I'm simply recommending people start hoarding parts while they are still worth buying off a junk car. Passing that 15 year mark hurts on those used parts. Gazi will still have cars around to pick from, but the parts are going to be much older past that 15 year mark. Even he will have to consider moving to the second gen Sc or Gs for parting out to stay in business.

its becoming harder and harder to find the scs wrecked at the auctions as well. i guess not too many on the roads compared to hondas, etc.
sooner or later, the wrecks will be harder to come by. i am wondering if lexus is still making parts for the sc?

Hey OLT, our cars are classic like the mustangs and camaros of yester year. They are getting older and yes it may become more difficult to own, but lets cross that bridge when it comes till then, lets take care of our SC's

Gotta keep moving to keep eating.
i bought two second gen gs' for parts. the only major requests i received were for the following items:
window regulators and door actuators
I guess lexus built the car right, unlike the sc:
- broken door handles
- clusters
- climate controls
- antenna
- door panels
etc.

jeez quit complaining...., get your hands dirty for a few hours fix the things that need fixing. NONE of that stuff is hard to do...(.o.k. the starter on a SC400 is no fun) Trust me, SC/Lexus/Toyota parts will be around for a long time. Cars are man made, which means ANYTHING can be repaired or fixed or REMADE. Ever been to a antique/classic car show. We all know the weak spots with these cars, if you can find cheap replacement stuff and love your SC,then buy the stuff. You will ALWAYS have a place to list/sell it. Craigslist, Ebay, etc. I remember when all we had were the newspaper classifieds. Drive and enjoy them for as long as you can, they don't build them as well any more.
