So my tech here had his SC rear ended last week and his insurance company is totalling it out. With that being said, he's offering to completely remove his functional A/C system (new compressor, condensor, good condition line, good condition control unit, etc) to swap my non-functional system for $1,000 installed.
Does this seem like a good buy? I've already felt and ridden in his SC prior to his accident. The system rocks. Plus everything was damaged from the rear of the vehicle.
agreed. why spend 1000 bucks. get the problems diagnosed and figure out which component is bad. i highly doubt that EVERYTHING in your A/C system is broken.
search for write-ups on how to diagnose trouble codes of the HVAC system. go from there.
The guy probably doesn't have that much demand for his supply so I think he would probably come down because something is better than nothing since it is being totalled by the insurance company. 300 is probably better in light of this situation.
if you've got a bunch of leaks all throughout the system or something, its probably not a bad deal. i think a new system installed by any local mechanic would be at least $1500, a few hundred more than that probably. If it's just your compressor and display unit, maybe look elsewhere.

If the insurance company is totalling the car doesn't that mean they're taking possesion of the car? So presumably he'll be taking all the a/c components out before turning over the car, even though the insurance company has already paid him for them, and then reselling them to you? Certainly he should get paid fairly for his time, but as for the parts they should be dirt cheap. Do you have a breakdown of the $1000, what's labor and what's parts?
