I removed the sensor directly to the left of the Idle Speed Control sensor on the throttle body to try and clean it, which was kind of pointless because it was clean. After reconnecting, the TRAC light was on in the tach and when you would hit the gas, the car will hesitate under acceleration if pushed to hard.

Is there an easy fix for this or am I in big trouble?

I have no way of checking codes, because I don't have a scanner.

All advice is appreciated.

 

I should also point out that this is now the only car I can drive because the IS is being repaired at a body shop and the white SC is getting a new radiator put in.

It is a black 1992 SC300 that has TRAC, automatic trans, and basically everything else.

The car was driving just fine until I got the bright idea to take that sensor out.

 

If you unplug the wiring to this sensor, the car operates normally (no hesitation). If you turn the traction off and do something to lose traction, say whipping it around a corner, the TRAC warning light then comes on.

I may have noticed a difference in the way the brake pedal sounded. Yet, the ABS worked just fine.

Any help is appreciated to get this fixed soon. I really need this.

 

Is it the sub-main tps sensor you are referring to? If you didn't put it back in the same position then its not going to be correctly calibrated. If there are two screws holding it in and its to the left of another sensor on the throttle body thats the sub-main tps and it has to do with the traction control system. Probably just needs to be recalibrated.

 

I removed mine as well on a 92 sc400. After reinstalling it, heard a clicking noise when I started the motor just for a few seconds and then the trac light would come on. Turned out I had put the sensor back on with the "paddles" on the wrong side of the "actuator". Once I got the insides right, minor adjustment using the slots on the outside, the light went out. Good luck.

 

Yes, the sub TPS is what I am referring to.

AllData says that you need a ohmmeter to calibrate it by adjusting it until it no longer gives some reading.

 

Also, does anyone know an easy way to get the ISC out of the car to clean it? The bottom screw is virtually inaccessible by any tool that I own. Do you have to take the throttle body off?

 

Your car is an OBDI so doesn't use a scanner. Jump the E1 and TE1 ports in the diagnostic box

I tried that but nothing happened except a flashing TRAC light, which would indicate that something is up with the system. (IE: If I need to recalibrate the sub-TPS)

Oddly enough, I disconnected the wiring to the sub TPS and the car operates just fine, except when it loses traction--the TRAC light stays on.

 

I was able to fix it without taking it to a shop.

I called Lexus to see if they would shoot me some tips.

Here was our conversation:

Dealer: "Well I won't be able to tell you without looking at it."

Me: "Alright well how much would it be to recalibrate the Sub-TPS?"

Dealer: "There is a $90 diagnostic fee followed by whatever needs to be replaced."

Me: "Looks like you aren't getting my business on this one!"
