So i want to replace my struts/shocks (there have been nomencalture problems) and the springs insultors are mostly deteriorated and fallen in two pieces. Are you all replacing these? Can they be repaired, they are almost half the price of the the struts themsleves and i'm wondering how important they are. Also if my strut mounts look okay, are they okay or is this also a given replacement?

What is a spring insulator? Do you mean the rubber boot that protects the strut body (under the spring)? If so, you can go to a 4-wheel parts parts, and gets those for cheap.

 

Well, kind of the shock boot, but in the SC, that and the piece of rubber that sits between the spring and the (I don't know what it is called) plate that holds the spring and the shock together, is one piece. When I redid my springs, I replaced these with Toyota Supra ones. Mine were also totally desintegrated. If you don't mind forgoing the boot part, I believe you can buy urethane ones from places like Summit Racing for the Supra and use those instead. I wouldn't not use them as it seems like they would play a big role in noise insulation. I don't remember, but I did not think they were too expensive when I got mine from the Toyota dealer.

 

on lexus part sites they call them "spring insulators" and they run about 30 each so its about $120, that adds alot to a strut job which is already expenisive, but my guess is they are there to prevent dirt from getting into the strut.

 

Like I said, for the Lexus, it's all one piece, the accordian boot part that goes over the shock to prevent dirt from getting into the shock and the part that sits between the spring and the top plate.
