sorry newbie question. but what are they?

Struts are similar to shock absorbers in nature. Struts are usually bolted to the side of either the suspension, or the vechile's wheel well. Where as shocks are usually attached to the upper shock tower to the lower part of the spring or control arm. Hope this helped.

Left pic is what a shock looks like and next to it is a strut.

Shocks and struts are safety components that maintain vertical loads placed upon the tires. They control spring and suspension movement to keep tires in contact with the road.

jm,
its kinda odd how you apparently like and probably know a whole lot about car audio, but little about basic vehicle components. not to be rude since i'm almost in that same boat.
i figure if your into car audio, you're usually into cars completely. if not, at least your getting there
