Default Lexus 300 SC Speedometer problem

I'm new to the forum. I have a 1992 Lexus 300 SC. The speedometer won't kick in until I reach 20 MPH but the odometer works and the cluster seems to be functioning. I recently replaced it with a used cluster but the same problem happened. Is this a common porblem with Lexus speedometers?? Does anyone have an idea of where to look next?

It is likely hanging up on the face. It happens when the needle is too close. Try pulling the needle out a little off the face. Good luck!

(PS- it could be coincidence that both cluster needles are too close to the face)

If that does not work, replace the speed sensor.

I also have a similar problem and I was told it was most likely the speed sensor. I was looking at the auto parts store and found it for 115 bucks is this a pretty good price? An any info on what exactly is involved in the installation would be helpful because I have not a clue to where the thing is even located.

Thanks in advance

Generally speaking, speed sensors are located in the transmission housing itself. Its not to difficult to replace, just a matter of getting underneath the car and undoing the bolts, and undoing the connection.

Tranny fluid will ooze out though.

But I dont think its your speed sensor, when that fails, both speedo fails completely and so does odometer.
