Question ECM Trouble

My 92 SC 300 I am being told is in need of a new ECM (Engine Control Module). It is a Federal Car with and Automatic Transmission with a production date of 10/91. The OEM part number is 89661-24310. I am looking for some advice on where to look for a re-manufactured or used part from a reputable company. The dealer is charging $1500.00, and I have seen a few sites on the internet advertising for as low as $150.00 (However they do not have my part #) and up to $500.00 (With the correct part number in stock). Is it really worth it for me to pay the dealer for the part when there is that much of a difference in the cost? I am not really interested in modifying the vehicle as it will be passed on to my 15 year old daughter in less than a year, so purchasing the aftermarket upgrades are not really what I am after. The car only has 80K miles on it, is this a common problem with these cars?

Before i motorswapped to 1JZ, my 92 sc300 went thru two ECU's in one year. What is your car doing? I have since sold all my ECU's but u can get a 92-95 or so ECU for around $100 bux, just post in the forsale/wanted section.

Question ECM Trouble

It is in a shop owned be a good friend of mine. He told me that there were no error codes but that cylinder #5 was not grounding and the problem is in the ECM. I am pretty mechanical, but exactly what is causing the problem has me confused. He just assured me that if I replaced the ECM that it would solve the problem, so I am going with it. He has never steered me wrong in the past!

Do you know if any of the ECM Model #'s are interchangeable or how I would find out? I had a wrecking yard tell me that there were other part numbers (24311, 24312, 24313) that would work but I want to verify that is really the case. What causes them to go bad (electrical short that could still be a problem)? Most of the ones I have found on line are more in the $300-500 price range, so I will post in the wanted on this site as well.

browse forsale secions on various forums (supra forums, here). I paid $75 for one last year. I don't know model #s, just 92 thru 95 or 96 sc300 ecu all works the same.

I wish I talked with you earlier, I bought one that is being shipped to me that comes with a 1 year replacement guarantee for $425.00 including the next day shipping from the east coast. I still have not figured out wether some of the model numbers are interchangeable so I just bit the bullet and paid more than I wanted to for it because it was the only one I could find with the exact same model number. My daughter is about to start driving next month and so I wanted to make sure the car was running in time and operating as reliable as it has in the past! Thanks for your offer!

Question ECM Differences?

Anybody know the difference between an ECM with a part # of 89661-24230 and one with a part number of 89661-24231? I have a 94 SC400 and my parts manual shows the 230 was used on models with a production date up to 8/93. My car was built in 9/93 and uses the 231 (Both ECMs are listed as Federal models). The reason I am asking is that Rock Auto lists the 230 for a '94 at about $103.00 plus core charge. They don't list the 231 at all. I've been having some flaky things happening every few weeks with my car (low idle, check engine light with trouble code indicating knock sensor missing signal, etc). My local Lexus repair shop says that my problems are most likely from a faulty ECM and I'm hoping I can use the one from Rock Auto. Any insight would be greatly appreciated ...

Just pull your ECU apart and solder in some new capacitors.

Easy fix, they always go bad with age.

ECU capacitors:
33uf, 35V
15uf, 35V
47uf, 63V
220uf, 10V
100uf, 10V
