Unhappy Same Smell From AC

Hi, I own a 1992 SC400. As many of you already know, there have been complaints about nasty mildew odors coming from these cars. Unfortunately my car also has this odor. I have tried the different techniques of eliminating the odor, but to no avail it comes back. Sometimes when i turn on the AC it smells like dead cat or another dead animal, other times just plain bad. I have put scent blocks in the filter compartment to help elliminate the odor, but it doesnt work, i tried also the lysol thing and that didnt work. What my question is, is that has anyone found a surefire, way of eliminating this odor? Thanks for any help.

P.S. When i purchased this car, the previous owner was a smoker, and either him or the owner before him had removed the AC filter.

You may actually have a dead animal in your car.. like a mouse or snake. Check aroud your Airconditioning intake vents.

Also, you have a filter under the passanger glove box that should probably be changed out. This may help.

Ive never heard of this problem ever occuring in our cars. But if I ever had this problem I wont stop until I find what might be causing the smell. You say it smells like a dead animal? It might just be a dead animal. Something probably went in and got stuck in the vents somewhere. I'd rip apart the dash and check every single vent including the ones that run underneath the seats to see if there is really something that had croaked.

I tried to use a product like febreeze. I dont know what it was (wife gave it to me) for me to use .

I think i over sprayed because I got soo dizzy one time after taking a test drive for about an hour. It smell good but it was too strong I guess hehe... How much you guys think it'll cost to get it professionally cleaned by a car-detailer?

Default Smell

The thing is i had checked under the passenger vents, and there was no filter there, i put little scent bricks there, but even when i still turn on the AC they dont help. My father thinks about checking the blower to see if that has buildup of bacteria on it. Also if anyone has done that before, was it easy or hard?

does your blower make a loud noise when turned up high?? i think also you have some small animal in the blower motor. its not uncommon for little rodents to hibernate in there while your sleeping

Prjct, the 92's did not (but can be fitted with one), the later years did, but if you bought your car used, who knows what is or isn't in there now? More info on our filters at:

Jew, you'll want to take a close look at that first thread (43531), since it
shows the procedure to expose the inner chamber of the SC A/C system:
