Trying to get an opinion on which do you feel is the best SC to own? A SC300 5-speed which has 225HP in all years made can give back more driver involvement with shifting and allow for more substantial modifications if you wanted vs. an SC400 V8 which also can endure mods but they have varying horsepower ratings depending on the year, which would you own (92 -99)? I am puzzled on the differences when it comes to comparing the different years other horsepower being increased on the SC400 but seem to think there is no difference with the SC300, is this all true? Someone fill me in on which is best and why?

Me and a friend both got SCs at the same time. I got a 400 and my friend got a 300. Both are '95 models.

My friends 300 is really quick to respond at low speeds but doesnt have the same punch once above 40 as my 400. But my 400 seems to have to be prodded a little more to get it to go from street start. But if you floor it, it will sit there and spin the wheels. His 300 will not do that even with traction turned off.

Another major differance is that while the 300 is very smooth at idle, the 400 is even more so at least in this case. it is impossible to tell my 400 is even running. So if that matters to you, it might be something to consider.

Oh yea and his gets much better gas mileage and he could easily slap in twin turbos and kick my A$$.

My SC has 250-260? HP, in 97 20+ more was added and I think the last year they had 290. Not sure about the 300.

Hope this helps!

Question

If you are not going to add a few thousands in turbos in such. The logical choice would be a SC4 any year. The V8 in the SC4 is so smooth and the power is splendid and strong.

Also the SC3 did not gain any more hp. The SC4 in 97'-00' I believe have 290hp.

Good luck...

I would take a 300 because if you plan on modding it you can crush a 400. 300's can easily be turbocharged as opposed to 400's. Also, except for the 98 and up 400's with 290 hp the others have only between 250/260 hp which I don't really think is that big of a difference from 225 hp. The 250/260 hp 400's are only marginally quicker than a 300 auto and about the same as a 300 5 speed. I would say a 300 auto with a torque converter might even beat a pre-98 400. And you'd get better mileage and the great sound of a straight 6.
