I called my local Firestone service center to ask about a transmission flush. He says they use VersaTrans synthetic blend for all applications, including T-IV. I looked at the spec sheet for VersaTrans and it does not list it having met or exceeded Toyota T-IV requirements. I am wondering if I should have them flush it or not. He says he has never run into any problems using VersaTrans in place of T-IV.

havent heard of the versatrans fluid but probably will add up in $
when we do trans flushes we'll use 4 to 5 GALLONS of fluid for 1 car
we just use dextron/mercon II atf then add a bottle of synthetic friction
modifier to the trans when finished (need the 1 that converts to t-IV)
1 of our trans shops we sublet to turned us on to friction modifiers years
ago - its much more cost effective for the shop & customer w/ no side
effects that i'm aware of - like i said we've been using them for years

never heard of that brand... im using toyota's type-iv right now but im about to switch

 

What do you plan on switching to?

 

On my old Soarer it says to use Dexron III, so that's all that went in there, but the new Soarer can only use Toyota Type-IV

Guess I'll stick to Toyota Type-IV then

 

Sonyman, I wouldn't do it!!!! Our 400's call for the T-IV. If it's not used you could end up with the dreaded tranny shimmer!!! Search around here, quite a few people have had their trannies do this (including me), and the culprit is predominantly non T-IV tranny fluid.

 

Thanks for your input. I'm still looking into my options as I would like to spend around $100 or less. None of the local dealers I have called have the capability to do a flush.

I'm fixing on doing a flush here in a bit. My dad got it flushed but I don't trust the place he brought it to. And i'm **** about my car like that so when I install my tranny coolers i'm gonna flush it too.

 

edit: we use dextron/mercon III atf (typo) - the friction modifier is made by ATP
honest i've been doing this over 20yrs & wouldnt steer you in the wrong direction
it works fine
we've done rx/highlanders, es/camry's that say 'no service under normal conditions'
on the dipstick which indicates t-IV fluid - but if the fluids black it needs to be serviced
no come backs or ever since problems on any of them using the modifier
