remove the pannel in the trunk, and you will be able to see where you can get to the bulbs.

+1 correct.

removing the inner panel exposes the bolts to remove the entire tail light.

Cool Tail lights

Thanks for all the help fellas, but how much effort is it to remove that panel? It looks like it's welded in place.

no no no, the carpeted pannel, not the metal one. its ok. there are 4 nuts (i think) holding in each tail light... they are either 10mm or 12mm... i cant remember. after you get the carpet pannel off, you will see the nuts.

Default No No No No No!!!!

For the SC300/400, just removing the plastic cover in the trunk is just the beginning. That only exposes the metal panel between the lights and the cover. Indeed read the tutorial the above post links to.

Now, another thing I learned. There are several press in type bulbs that look correct and actually will work. But, be sure and use bulbs the replacement guide at the auto parts store says to use ONLY. The others are slightly different resistance and will make the rear-bulb-is-out indicator in the Speedo cluster to light up even thought all taillight bulbs are working.

To give a walk through narrative on replacing the bulbs without following the link:

Remove that panel by removing the plastic twist type snaps. This exposes the 4 10mm nuts per taillight that hold the taillights in place. You have to remove the taillights to access the bulbs. On the passenger side, you access the two outside most nuts without removing the panel. These two may be covered by plastic covers and are located just above the CD changer. The covers simply pull off. On the driver side, you have to remove enough of the side panel plastic snaps to allow pulling it out also to access the two outside most 10mm nuts.

Once the nuts are removed, unplug each of the two wiring harness’s then press the rubber seal through the hole toward the taillight so each wiring harness can pull through as you remove the tail lights. It will take a bit of jiggling to pull out the taillight assemblies. Be sure the harnesses aren't hanging up as you pull out.
