Default Steering Wheel Upgrade Complete!

I've completed my 3 spoke steering wheel mod. I used a steering wheel from a 2000 GS400 and an airbag from a 2000 RX300. (CleanSC and silversprucesc3 were very helpful

I bought the steering wheel and airbag on ebay. (I had also bought a 2001 GS400 wheel from silversprucesc3 as well. That has now been sold to VSsc400 in what was probrably the quickest sale ever. Thanks Dennis)

There were two things needed to make this conversion work. The first was to change over the cruise control lever and wires from my stock steering wheel to the new wheel. I then had to cut off the airbag connector from my stock wheel and swap it onto the new airbag. The whole project took me about an hour to do and is definitely worth it. Enjoy the pics!

Here's a pic of the backside of the airbag. Notice the red outline of the connector you need to swap from your stock airbag to the new airbag. This is a single stage airbag that will work with your SC's airbag system as long as swap the connector. Skip this step if you don't care about having an operable airbag system.

Here's a pic of the steering wheel with the airbag removed. The part outlined in red is what needs to be swapped from your stock steering wheel to the new steering wheel.

you can actually buy a connector from Curt @ Elmhurst Toyota that takes care of airbag connector without any splicing...

From Curt Aigner...
09082-00760 HARNESS ab adapter list 25.00 cost 20.00

Nice job none the less I've got a 98 MKIV steering wheel that'll be going in shortly as well

Very nice Jeremy... I recently picked up a squib adapter for the airbag to avoid splicing the wires.

what year is your SC? and did the airbag light go off?

So your saying that the GS airbag (I guess 2end gen) will work in the sc's old first gen air bag system? Thanks in advance.

The airbag I have is a single stage airbag and is compatible with the SC's system. Two stage airbags will not work.

Lightbulb airbag

So basically.... The deal is that if it is a single connector, it's a single stage(98-00 GS)? And if it is 2 connectors, it is dual stage dual igniter?? And what about the RX steering wheel and airbag? Isn't there one available in wood that will fit the 98-00 GS and also allows the airbag(01) to work also??? Or does the airbag have to be the single stage/igniter, hence no chrome emblem..???
