I thought all the 98+'s were 5spd, thats what the difference in the transmissions were??

Ditto...
SC4 and SC3 had 5-spd autos after 97

SC300 had a 4 speed; the SC400 was bumped to a 5 speed.

I've got a 98 SC300, and it's definitely a 4 speed.

The trac off button is next to the trunk/gas-lid release swicht .

This is kind of an old thread...There is a thread of a guy that managed to get the parts from the SC300 tranny and swap it out with the 4 speed auto on the SC400's. So I think it can be done at some considerable effort and cost. If you are not planning to make major performance mods to your 400, like turbo, or supercharge, then just buy a newer model...97 and upand you get a 5 speed auto...

i mean install the gated shifter from an SC300 98+ (uses the same trans as old SC400). I would think since its the same trans that it wouldnt be all that difficult, all the parts are made, just a matter of getting them.
