you can get a reconditioned one for around $300, but I haven't heard great things about the reconditioned units, alot of people say they go out often after install. And are always needing servicing. I have priced the new ones from Lexus and a shop's cost is around $900 for just the AC compressor unit. You could probably do it on your own if you mechanically inclined to do so....Good luck

i recently has my compressor replaced in my LS400, and it was with a rebuilt one. It cost around 400 and i had a mechanic do it. I dont' know if the 300 has somewhat of the same basic as the 400, but if it does then i wouldn't do it unelss your a fairly decent mechanic. you have to remove your radiator and a bunch of other stuff. Also you have to replace the reciever dryer and some hoses.. Then you have to repressurize the system. Which is a couple of hundred more..

I don't think you would need to remove the radiator to replace the compressor. Now the condensor yes.
Most problems people experience with replacing a compressor and then having it go out is due to not getting all the debris out, or not filling it proberly with the correct amount of oil.
Luckly most reman compressors come prefilled with the correct amount of oil. When the compressor goes bad is loses pieces of itself throughout the system.
I would replace the parts and take it to a shop that knows you replaced the parts to evac and charge the system for you. Find a shop first that will work with you.
As far as difficulty, just a few bolts hold it on. And try to get a compressor with a new clutch already on.
