I finally got around to replacing the spark plugs on my '95 SC300 at 150k miles. One thing of note is that the plugs show that I am running pretty lean. We replaced the fuel filter so maybe that helped. Any other ideas?

Anyways, the really strange thing was the compression test. The first two cylinders were great at around 180. The 3rd cylinder was at 230! The 4th was back at 180, and the 5th n 6th were back up in the 220-240 range! It is not operator error. We double and triple checked and my mechanic is no stranger to a simple compression test.

What causes this? My car does have a little bit of trouble starting on occasion, and the low end power doesnt feel quite as good as it should.

 

Was the engine cold when you did the test ?

 

it makes a diffrence if you try to do a compression test on the motor if its cold and if its warm. you suppose to do it after you warm up the car.

 

Yeah I guess that could have been it. The car had only been driven the 20 yards from the street to the garage in the 3 hours before we started working on it. It also took us about an hour to get the throttle body removed so we could access the plugs (it was our first time doing this).

lol, hate to bring this up from the dead, but I just ran across it.

I was the guy that did the compression test, and I have done eleventy billion compression tests before, but this was the first time I had seen the numbers do that. A couple of days later I ran a compression test on my own SC3 and I got 180 across the board. I followed the same procedure as we did on Richard's car and nothing funky happened.

BTW: the reason it took us so long to get the TB off was because the last clown that worked on his car put the little clamp thingy on to where the prongs faced straight down, and there was no way to get any kind of pliers in there to unclamp it. Once we got that one hose off, it took all of about 10 seconds to finish.

Removing the TB on my car only took about 10 minutes total...
