97+ Tails do NOT like ovens
In an attempt to custom mod a 97+ tail, I melted a brand new light in my oven. Of the 10+ lights I have put in the oven, this is the first to melt on me.
I was quite upset, it was a brand new light purchased in the GB. Steve has a new one to replace it on the way already. He's been great.
For the record:
Oven preheated to 225 degrees. Light was placed in the oven on a cookie sheet for 9 minutes. That's all it took. After I got it out, the glue was like syrup. It dripped into the inside of the light and it came apart like the glue was not there. Pulled apart very easy. Too bad the light was destroyed. Anywhere the black glue cools and hardens, it's there - permanently. It's tenacious stuff.
This new black glue requires a higher temp to get it loose. The older lights use a gray glue which softens at a lower temp and I've never had a problem.
So for you wanting to customize these, watch your temperatures carefully. These are not as easy as the lights with the grey glue. The outer pink lense also melts rather easily.

i think you left the light too long................dang...........9 mins?
when i worked on my headlights on my gs, i only let it sit there for 3mins max!!!
even wrapped with damp towel.
sorry to hear that, bro....next time, just let it cook for 3 mins after the oven has warmed up to 300deg.
hope that helps.

He's removing some of the lense material inside....it's nothing special but it does look nifty.
I've learned that when doing things like this it's better to leave the lights in the oven at only 2 minute intervals. With my RX7 and Supra lights it took about 20 minutes a piece with them in and out...which means it's a lot more tedious but you don't have to worry about mishaps like this.

Removing some of the lens material makes it look better? Hmmm...I'll have to see it to believe it. Anyone who has done this have pics? Please post.

Guys:
The SC headlights will take 10 minutes in there no prob. I just did 2 right now.
But to be safe with an unfamiliar unit, I did put the tail in for 8 minutes, and it wasn't enough. The glue was rock solid. So I let it cool, and put it in for 9 more.
Obviously it was too much.
The mod I was after was unclear. I usually let the mods come to me after it's open and I try different things and see how they look. Mainly, it was to make the lens all red and eliminate the amber which kills the light IMO. Then once it was open, look into LEDs, etc...
Here's a pic of the fried light with the amber eliminated. This is the flavor I am after. I'm not a fan of the amber at all.

I don't see much difference. Can I see a before and after pic?
As requested.
Top is all red 97 tail (try to ingore and look past the melted cover lens)
Bottom is stock 97 tail with the amber portion. IMO, the amber kills it. the upper light is much more uniform, and at flows better. That amber square on the stocker makes the light clash with itself.
Pics on the car would make more of a difference. The lights side by side don't portray the effect too much. But you get the idea of what was being modded.

Now I see, you don't like the yellowish color on the rear lights. Well...to each his own. I happen to like the way the stock light looks. Maybe one day I won't like it and will know what to do...either cook it up or buy one without the amber. Good thing I'm an excellent cook. My 95 has only faint yellow, I wish it stood out more.
