i've searched an read posts and have seen people say that it does have lsd, and that it doesnt. which is it? i wanna change the diff oil, what weight should i use? how do i refill the diff? thanks!

 

None of the SC's came with LSD, all model years.

Just use a good GL-5 gear oil (per Lexus service manual), I use Mobil 1 myself (only comes in one viscosity 75-90 if I remember right). Jack up the rear end right under the differential and you'll see two plugs facing the passenger side. A 10mm hex-key socket is needed to loosen the plugs. MAKE SURE YOU LOOSEN THE UPPER FILL PLUG FIRST, then loosen the lower drain plug. Othwise if you run into a seized fill plug you will not be able to refill the differential. Capacity is around 1.5 quarts and the plugs are torqued to 33 ft-lb when done.

I was about to ask the same question...but I have a SC300....
well..I test my car with some quick turn-around and burnout......all tests came out to be that I have LSD...or at least I spin both tires.....or is this just a coincidence????
I did 3 quick turn-around and one long burnout....and some launching the same night....all tries were 2 tires

btw...my SC300 is a 92 model

 

djl is right....none of our cars came with LSD. Your spinning both wheels because you have even traction.

If you can spin both tires all the way through a burnout, that pretty much acts exactly like an LSD. I thought the whole purpose of an LSD was even traction and power split to both wheels; if a stock SC performs this way then I say - great. If you have constant traction and equal power distribution to both wheels, why would you want to fork over cash for an LSD to accomplish the same exact result - seems redundant

Coincidentally, it was raining here in Clearwater, FL today and on my way home I punched it to pass and my rear broke loose and got a little sideways. Imagine my surprise that my "open diff" SC4 behaved in the same exact manner as my 3rd Gen Camaro w/positrac rear. What the bleep, I thought to myself.

no options to put LSD on the SC's LS's or GS's
Lexus USA never offered LSD as an option
I called lexus USA and talked to 2 different reps in 3 different times and the answer was no LSD
I swapped my stock SC400 rear diff with a supra 4.27LSD. so I opened my stock rear diff. NO LSD. yes my car used to leave 2 even marks. NO LSD

I am not mechanically inclined so I can't explain why it leaves 2 even marks other than that both wheels had even traction.

even the supra LSD is a 5x multiplication LSD. which means it can transfer up to 5 times the amount of power to the wheel with grip, but when one wheel completely loses grip it will act exactly like an open diff.

if you think your open diff is good just imagine how much better 5:1 ratio torsen limited slip would be.

do a brake stand burnout with the rear wheels in a shallow puddle of water. 1 wheel only.

 

I've always spun 2 tires and was happy enough with the better-than-others open differential, until i went turbo.
Now I know what it's like to put power to one wheel.
If I powershift into second gear, the right tire gets all the power and my car gets thrown to the left.
This is really annoying although it looks funny as hell.
The thing I hate most about the open differentila is coming out of a slide around a 90* turn.
It always catches very suddenly and jerks the car pretty hard.
LSD comes out of "power-turns" much smoother.
