BFI Complete - Pictures
jbrady,
Thanks for the praise on the airbox mod. A couple of points come to mind.
At least part of Peter's goal on the BFI 3 (while maintaining effectiveness) was to build a refined, better looking intake that would not take away from the look of the car with the hood raised. Part of my idea of using lexan for the cover was in fact to "show off" just how good the airbox looks with the bellmouths. Peter even states, "It's a shame you don't see them with the top cover in place!" According to Peter he achieved equal results with the BFI#2 & #3.
While it can be a challange to locate the egg cups, I think they add tremendously to the overall level of fit and finish of the BFI3. To use the clear lexan and then just be viewing a chopped airbox would take something away from the project in my opinion. It was really quite easy to drill the airholes using a 2 1/2" hole saw, grind the bottoms off the egg cups and glue them in place. I think the effort is easily worth the results. The cost of the bellmouths and the weight are negligible. I have about $10.00 in the 3 egg cups which includes having them shipped from Australia! Considering what most mods cost the BFI3 is dirt cheap.
So while you could certainly do it without the egg cups.... I am so pleased with the results I am glad I didn't. Everyone who has seen the Lexan BFI in person has nearly gasped at how good it looks. It even exceeded my expectations.
So I guess it depends on your goals. I achieved mine which were:
1) improved performance (and sound)
2) to have it look like as clean as possible.
Thanks again for your comments! Have you been able to measure the airflow on your LS box or dyno the results?

FACE,
You are right, they do look good, not quite as cool as my cardboard heat shield...
note: cardboard retired... blue foam shielding in place both on airbox and MAF to TB tube.
As far as the egg cup choice.... if it performs well, it may as well look good also. I choose performance first looks second but that doesn't mean I don't like nice looking parts.
Again, great job. I hope it encourages more people to make the mod.
