The rear quarter molding fell off my vehicle. Has this happened to anyone? If so, how much did it cost at the dealer and what is the part called?

 

Yes, have heard of this happening before to several. However, were under warranty so no estimates on cost. The part is only available as a whole window assembly unless they have changed things... which I doubt. $$$$

So, would recommend trying to find an RX in the junkyard and pull the part. As you have found out it is only tape glued in place.

Are you talking about the rear quarter window molding?

 

I am assuming that is what they were referencing. That "L" shaped piece of plastic trim around the little window in the back. Kind of looks in a way like the Lexus logo itself.

Is only held in place by a series of what seem to be peel-n-stick glue pads in a few places. No clips or such. Some of these are of poor adhesive quality depending on production date and are not a reflection of where they were produced -- Canada or Japan.

When this happens the dealer has to replace that entire window assembly which includes the trim piece. Makes no sense but that is what they do.

 

On ours, it was really loose, so I removed the trim piece completely and cleaned the area with alcohol. Next, I put a bead of silicone down, secured the molding and it has stayed fine ever since. If memory serves, the part (they force you to replace the glass and molding) was $350 from the dealer and I think Safelite was going to charge $75 to install. Per the dealer's advice, I decided to try the silicone option and it hasn't budged since.

 

This issue has been reported many times.

Better check them and if they are loose, take them in for warranty work, if still under wrty. If not the silicone bead as stated above should work. Better repair it than trying to but the trim piece. I am sure the later years had better tape used.

They used an inferior tape and I am sure the new ones put in are better. And no it does not represent Lexus quality.

 

Mine came loose before falling completely out, so I had the piece. (2004 RX330). I took it to the local body shop, who cleaned the piece up and glued it back on. No charge!

 

Mine has been checked, all tight!

 

Unfortunately, mine fell off completely at just over the 4 year mark, and this is not covered by the CPO warranty, only by the original 4 year warranty.
The fix was surprisingly expensive for a lost piece of trim [insert your own joke here].

 

Sorry to hear this. Lexus used inferior tape and won't stand by their product.

 

Mine are ok, but this is good advice for a lasting dyi repair.

 

cdnewton, can you please be more elaborate on what you did, like how did you pry that thing off? What tips to use and what tape?

This will be a good DIY. Prevention rather than detection or in this case, loss of trim which translates to $$$$!
