Default Locking/unlocking from Backseat

Hi, I’m a new mom with a 2021 RX. I breastfed and change my baby’s diaper in the backseat very frequently. The issue is that I can’t lock my car for our safety once I get in the back. The keyfob will not lock the doors and it’s not really possible for me to stretch around and hit the lock button on the driver door with the baby. I can just push the pin down on my one nearby door, but all the others are still unlocked. Any ideas on what I should do? I would like the engine to be running.

My husband’s ram truck lets you lock with keyfob inside the vehicle and that works really well for us. I’m very disappointed that I haven’t come up with a solution as this is a major safety issue for us and one of the big downsides to my otherwise, much loved, vehicle. Thank you!!

Your question got me curious, so I tried a few things on my 2020 RX. First, I confirmed your experience. I tried locking from the app, holding the fob out an open window and trying to lock, and trying to use the touch lock areas with the fob held out the window. Nothing worked.

I did find a workaround that might be acceptable to you. Turn on the engine and get in the back seat, then lock the doors from the fob. That works even with the fob in the vehicle. Then use the fob or the app to remote start the car. That works, too, even with the fob in the vehicle. You will want to remember to unlock the vehicle with the fob before opening the doors, otherwise the alarm will go off. When you unlock with the fob the engine will shut off.

Been thinking about this and experimenting for an hour or so, thought about using the key, etc., and I came up with a way but it's a bit cumbersome.

1. Turn off the remote
2. Open a rear door
3. Push the lock all doors button to the left of the steering wheel
4. Get in the car and close the rear door.

You are now in the car and all the doors are locked.
Now, and this is "very important", turn on the remote from inside the car or with the rear door open and unlock all the doors. Do not take any chance that your baby could get locked inside, although you could use the physical key to open the doors.

Hope this helps.

All those steps aren't necessary. See my earlier post. In recipe fashion, it looks like this:
1. Park and stop the engine.
2. Get in the back seat with the baby
3. Lock the car with the fob, then start the car with the fob. The vehicle will run for 10 minutes, but can be restarted via the fob at least once to get a total of 20 minutes.

There's no chance of locking the baby in the vehicle using this method. When finished, simply unlock the car with the fob, get back in the driver's seat, start the vehicle and drive away.

Since I had never tried to lock the doors from the inside with the fob I didn't know that you can do it with the engine off but not with the engine running. So her question really is how do it with the car running.
Your way is much better!!

The service is behind a paywall now, but I thought it was included through the first three years of ownership. Can you start your car from the Lexus app? If so, try this on the remote:
1. lock the vehicle with the remote and wait a few seconds
2. Press the lock button three times on the remote, holding the lock button down on third press.

You should see the parking lights flash and the vehicle start. I don't think this is documented anywhere. Toyota/Lexus is squirrelly about the capability for reasons I don't understand.
