Default Rust on tailgate struts

Noticed some squeaky noise during rear power lift gate opening and closing in the summer time and when when i load my winter sets into the trunk, i found rust on the struts. 2016 with 32000 km. Is this normal ?

My 2016 was making a squealing sound from the struts, but my attachment points aren’t corroded like yours. The dealer said there was dirt buildup on the strut seals. They cleaned them & I haven’t had any issue since. From the looks of your struts, I would guess your corrosion comes from all the winter crap they have to treat the roads with In your area. If it’s not washed off routinely, it will eat any exposed metal. I would definitely have the dealer look at your struts. Maybe they will replace them for free.

Mine are not that bad but they are going to be replaced under warranty (2016 as well). I'm waiting for the parts because they have problem ordering since they changed their system to SAP. They have been ordered in end of September.
I hear a squeak sound on bumpy roads plus when opening and closing the door.

Once they change them, let me tell you that I will lubricate regularly so that it does not rust again.

Lubricating those struts where the corrosion is located, may result in a slimy, dirt-coated mess. That area MUST be kept clean. I would suggest painting the parts that were corroded in order to stop corrosion from occurring again.

For us, it is better to repel water with white lithium grease. Besides it corroded where it was already painted, and I guess we don't have the Texan dust either.
If it gets too dirty, I'll just wipe out the excess of grease and put some more.

Should be replaced if within the bumper to bumper warranty. If fully functional, applying grease will stop the corrosion. If not replaced within warranty, an aftermarket set costs $30 to $40. Very easy to replace. Get StrongArm brand. Of course you can get OEM Toyota, will cost a couple of hundred though.

my local dealer won’t cover this repair under warranty since my lift gate is still functional.

I am noticing the same corrosion and squeaky sound. This should be replaced as part of bumper to bumper rust free warranty!

service advisor said the bumper-to-bumper warranty will only cover the rusted struts if the tailgate has difficulty opening/closing. I’m going to another dealer for a second opinion

In wintry North, this is more prevalent. If noticed earlier, a dab of oil could have prevented more rust. Fortunately replacements are cheap, $30 to $35 for a pair. Easy to replace. Go get it replaced and feel better.

I washed my 2017 RX350 this weekend, due to summer and lockdown, and I noticed the Rust in the exact same spots, a bit worse though. (Yeah I am in Wisconsin and Illinois)

Any updates from previous posters? Were they replaced under RUST warranty?

Thanks

It's amazing how dealer's support reflects on the brand overall impression of quality! Some dealers ought to only sell matches.
If you don't like that dealer's answer try another one.

I could not get one to replace it but never got around to a second dealer due to lock down and distance. This is horrible on Lexus if they do not want to cover this as warranty.
