I had driven German brands many ears before and they all had "start-stop" button, which i always turned off instantaneously. On my wife's 2020 BMW 5 series car does not remember the last setting by default and i had to go an extra mile and code the car to remember that i want start/ stop off at all times. I understand that each to their own but i find start/ stop to be hideous). On my commute to work, i have about 47 traffic lights. Given the fact that some of them happen to be green ( of course, when i am in a hurry they are not). On an average day, i face 30 red lights. One way. 30 on my way back. It is 60 times the car engine stops and turns on again unnecessarily. Isn't it extra work for the starter? Engine? For what? To save 2 drops of gasoline ( which is questionable to me).

They don't care as long as it shows that by doing so one gets an xtra 0.10 of a mile they'll do it thanks to the EPA, but there is a solution. There are OBDII dongles that one can plug in that do remember the last setting and so eliminate the stop 'n go for as long as the dongle is plugged in.

"But the main question most car buyers have about new start-stop systems is: won't they wear out my car's starter motor?
The answer is no."

Pretty old news.

I think there may be some models that don't even allow you to disable the feature. Crazy approach to try to comply with CAFE.

Sure maybe not the best source but there are many others. I just picked the top search result for "start stop starter wear". There are many others.

Angry Automatic Engine Shutdown

As I waited in my car at the vet's office today my 2020 RX350 shutdown---long period waiting for blood tests and a practice where they would not permit you to wait inside. Since it was 92 outside I thought: "What the heck just went on?" After starting the car back up, searching the internet I found an article where Toyota (not Lexus) was going to roll out and "Auto Shut Off" with enhanced audible and visual warning.
Toyota Plans to Deploy Automatic Engine Shut Off and Automatic Park Features to Vehicle Line Up - Toyota USA Newsroom
Does my 2020 RX350 have the feature and can it be disabled? Why? We live in coastal SC where temps can go as high as 100 and we often drive about with our dog in the car. At lunches and other meals we often leave the car running with the A/C on because otherwise the inside temps would be intolerable for him and likely result in death fairly quickly.

I came out of an appointment with a doctor the other day and noticed the car was not running. I panicked and got it open to find the inside temp was a little high but tolerable and go it running ASAP.

Can anyone shed light on this issue?

Thanks

Does your vehicle have a disable button?

I think what OP is talking about is not Engine Start/Stop. Engine Start/Stop is the feature that shuts off the engine at a traffic light and restarts when you press the gas padel. The engine shutdown after running it for a while at idle is a different feature and I don't think it has an off button.

So there’s a system on the new Lexus models that turns the vehicle off. If it is sitting and idles too long?

Is this only on Hybrids? Where you sit using only electricity. And the engine kicks on to recharge?

Apparently! Thankfully for those of us with MY pre 2020 all we have is a radio shut-off if playing it with the engine off after about 10 min.

Once again, RTing the FM proves valuable. This is what page 177/178 of my 2020 Owners Manual (pdf version) says:
Automatic engine shut off feature
●The vehicle is equipped with a feature that automatically shuts off the engine when the shift lever is in P with the engine running for an extended period.
●The engine will automatically shut off after approximately 1 hour if it has been left running while the shift lever is in P.
●The timer for the automatic engine shut off feature will reset if the brake pedal is depressed or if the shift lever is in a position other than P.
After the vehicle is parked, if the door is locked with the door lock switch (P.99) from the inside or the mechanical key from the outside,
the automatic engine shut off feature will be disabled.
The timer for the automatic engine shut off feature will be re-enabled if the driver’s door is opened.

Note the last bullet contains instructions to disable the feature.
