Windshield replacement
I'm under the impression that HUD cars use a different windshield than non-HUD. That probably accounts for a major chunk of it.
Need to replace my windshield. Dont have HUD but do have rain sensors. Is there something that need to be calibrated? I looked through old post and someone asked but didnt get a response or I just missed it. Any help would be nice so I know about asking.
They have to remove the sensor from the old windshield to the new, also makes sure that the windshield meets OEM specs, I believe it's triple glazed and some aftermarkets only give you double glazed.
Well just had a rock hit my Rx450h windshield and cracked it. In Texas, I have had over 5 hits in the past two years. The largest five were filled with my Tire and Warranty. This one, started cracking by the time I got home and needs the windshield replaced. My insurance Nationwide does not cover an OEM glass, even though I paid for an OEM rider. It is hidden in some Loss endorsement that glass is not covered. Too bad since that was the main reason I got it. Nationwide uses Safelight Auto Glass. In the past replacing the windshield of an MDX, I have not been a fan. The glass they use is inferior in quality, has less heat rejection, less sound absorption, and chipped more easily than the original glass.
Anyway, beware of your OEM rider of your insurance. It probably does not cover the windshield.
By the way, the Park Place Lexus charges $1500 to replace it since I have a HUD, cameras, and windshield heaters. To calibrate the cameras, the dealer charges $500 extra.
Safelite claims $1300 for non OEM glass and $1700 for OEM glass, including callibration.
The dealer stated that they recently had customer with a lane detection problem warning and that it was due to windshield replaced and improperly calibrated. So buyer beware.

had my windshield replaced, OE glass lexus , system calibrated.
100% covered by insurance.
took a rock chip low, in the dark part on the passenger side on a trip, safelite said they could easily fix it, put the suck filler machine on it and it cracked out, then he said they usually crack out that low. what ??? i asked several times, and said if the probability of being worse than not doing anything, lets not try. Within hours it was all over the windshield, half way up, over to the drivers side, about 8 or more veins , sucked, i was on a 3 week trip, then safelite does the billing for many insurance companies, so they drug more ***. lol. End result was a dealer reckoned glass company, that we checked into did the work and handled everything.
safelite claims oe and their glass is exactly the same, Dealer recommended glass company said OE, especially due to all the electronics, and hud. (we have dealers in the west metro they service, very high end stuff. down to regular joe vehicles.)

My rock chip was also in the dark part where the windshield wipers reside on the driver side. Several veins up the driver's view and a large one up the middle of the windshield.
I have worked on several optics projects and seen many differences in anti-reflective and UV coatings, number and thickness of layers, etc. Glass composition is the same, but the other stuff is different and varies by vendor. Once you run your tests, you realize how different is the glass. The glass might be similar and close in performance, but not the same since the recipe and testing is not shared.
It is nice that your insurance covered 100%, I have to deal with my deductible and was very surprised that my OEM rider did not cover glass and "new parts not made by the original equipment manufacturer." That seems pretty broad.

Lexus glass, on the bottom right, by the a pillar on the drivers side will say lexus, and the location i think the glass was made.
I can take a picture of my replacement.
Safelite was pushing their glass, after the repair went terrible, i passed.
I would guess the 150$ is after insurance, or possibly to upgrade to oe Lexus??

Has anyone with Pre collision sensor, LKA, etc., had their windshield replaced with an aftermarket one from Safelite? There is no option to get OEM through my insurance, and there are 18 different part numbers for windshields! How do they know which one it is? The only way to file a claim was online and it took me straight to the Safelite website, which only asked about HUD and wiper defrosters (is that even available on a 4RX?). If you've had yours replaced, did you have any problems with rain sensors or LKA?
Agree with most everyone's feedback to ONLY use Lexus OEM glass. In PA, there is NO glass replacement insurance coverage. It came under liability coverage with $1000 deductible (ugh).
Glass $$ was near $1300. Also had to pay Lexus to recalibrate all the sensors.
Good news is Lexus service handled the whole transaction, including outsourcing the install with a certified glass installer, and gave me a loaner. Very happy with the customer service, but ugh on the $$$ outlay.
