Windshield replacement
Has anyone with Pre collision sensor, LKA, etc., had their windshield replaced with an aftermarket one from Safelite? There is no option to get OEM through my insurance, and there are 18 different part numbers for windshields! How do they know which one it is? The only way to file a claim was online and it took me straight to the Safelite website, which only asked about HUD and wiper defrosters (is that even available on a 4RX?). If you've had yours replaced, did you have any problems with rain sensors or LKA?
I had my windshield replaced. I had paid extra on my Nationwide insurance to have OEM part replacement coverage. But when I made my claim, Nationwide claimed that windshields among many items that are not made by Lexus (tires, glass, plastics, etc. - what exactly is a Lexus part seemed to be up for discussion) are not covered by OEM parts and directed me to Safelite. The Safelite website asked about HUD and wiper defrosters, which my car has those options. The HUD has a coating on the inner glass that reflects the HUD display to the driver. So you need to get a different windshield. The wiper defrosters and rain sensors have areas that are not covered by the black frame, so those also need a special version of the windshield. Safelite claim they calibrate the sensors with the new windshield install. In the past, I had used Safelite for an Acura windshield replacement and was not pleased, The new windshield let in more noise (even though I had selected the noise reducing one) and the glass sharpness was very different from the OEM glass. So this time around, I went with Lexus OEM part and replaced the glass at a dealer since they got pretty close in matching the cost. I dropped my OEM coverage and argued with insurance to pay most of the replacement.
Just got it replaced with aftermarket glass at Safelite and everything works fine. When I picked it up I was automatically assuming something would be wrong, so I took it home and tried sprinkling water on the windshield. Didn't work so I was going to take it back. Good thing they were closed till Monday because the rain sensing wipers don't work with a front door open! Real world test driving with real rain, it works almost the same as before. Sensor seems to be a little less sensitive than before. There are tiny specs of lint and a small air bubble, so I'm thinking for the ones that weren't working, the tech probably broke the sensor itself when removing it. I don't think it needs any special kind of adhesive, since mines seems to have been just stuck back on and works fine.
Hello everyone,
Anyone have experience with getting the windshield replaced? I purchased some garbage "three for one" protection from Lexus of Portland dealership during late November of 2019 that does not include warranty for cracks over 6 inches. I personally hate all protection or extras but only purchased because I heard it covers windshield cracks and will replace if not repairable. But of course they say this is not covered under the protection plan when I file a claim. Please be vigilant and record the conversation when the finance manager is selling you stuff. A $995 lesson for me, hope this will not happen to anyone else in the future. Remember to record the conversation between you and the finance manger if deciding to purchase protection, might have to ask for recording consent based on state.
What is the general pricing for OEM replacement? Any experience with Safelite? Any problems with the calibration after replacement? I plan on paying the deductible to get it replaced, will not increase my premium in the future.
Car spec:
2020 RX 350
No windshield de-icer for wipers
Heads-up display
Rain sensing wipers

Another example of the scam extended warranty/protection plans the stealerships sell.
Nice to have such generous insurance. Most insurances do not cover full replacement costs. Also, most insurances have contracts with windshield repair companies and will not cover Lexus dealer nor OEM glass. Furthermore, coverage changes by state and city, so your experience is not the same as others. For example, I have Nationwide insurance, on my windshield replacement, Nationwide only covers Safelite to perform the work. use non OEM glass, and I still have to pay for deductibles. I had an OEM-parts rider and they would not cover OEM glass. So be wary of OEM-parts rider in your insurance, it was a big scam after I saw the list of parts not covered, including a windshield.
I recently needed to replace my windshield around the same time as an annual service, so I was at the dealership and asked them how it worked. The Service Advisor told me they could take care of it and would charge standard insurance rates and then I could just file a claim with the insurance company to get reimbursed. I was a little hesitant so I went ahead and called my insurance company to verify. The first person I spoke with told me the dealership would charge a lot more and they could not guarantee that I would be reimbursed for the expense--it came across like a bunch of scare tactics. But at one point in the conversation, the insurance guy did say something like "you have the right to choose where you get your vehicle repaired", but he said under his breath like either he had to say it or he didn't really mean it.
I was going back and forth in the Service Advisors office talking to both the insurance company and the Service Advisor. The Service Advisor said that even if I let the insurance company do it that I should still bring it back to the dealer to get everything calibrated, so I ran that by the insurance guy and he claimed they had all of the same calibration gear and could do it too. I asked my insurance person to speak to their manager just to get a second opinion but was told again that they have their own people and can do it cheaper and that if I let the dealer do it they may not cover the repair.
Unfortunately, I was really busy at work and didn't have the time to let the dealer sit on it for day and then have to run around town for the insurance company to sit on it for another day so I decided to just let the dealer do it and take my chances. So I get the loaner car and get back to work and let the dealer take care of everything. They called me the next day to pick it up. I had to pay the full price for the repair but was assured they used standard insurance rates and that I could submit a claim with the dealer receipt. I had to pay the dealer the full amount for the parts and labor to replace the glass but it saved me a bunch of time.
So I took the dealer receipt and contacted the insurance company and was immediately told once again that I should have called them first, and I should have gotten approval for the repairs, and that they were not going to make any promises about reimbursing me for the repair--I still couldn't believe the scare tactics they were putting me through even after I told them that I DID contact them beforehand and was told that "I have the right to choose where I get my vehicle repaired", and then they changed their tone and told me to send an email with a copy of the receipt. A couple weeks later I got a check from the insurance company for the full amount of the dealer repair minus my $100 deductible for windshield replacement. So it seems to have worked out OK to let the dealer handle the windshield replacement, I saved the time needed to get to and from the Insurance company's repair shop, and I am confident that the dealer re-calibrated all of the Lexus Safety Systems properly.

Glad to hear it all worked out. In hindsight, always make sure you first file a claim with your insurer. That is key as it starts the workflow for communication. They may assign (probably not for a windshield) an adjuster. From there you and your dealer will know all costs.
Most all Lexus service advisors are honorable and are compensated based on customer feedback. Sounds like yours was spot on.

Just so that everyone knows, don't fall for the standard insurance price, it's hundreds more than the regular price.
Just tell the dealer that you'll pay out of pocket as the windshield is not covered by your insurance, then pay it and send THAT receipt to you insurance company for reimbursement.
Same for all the indy glass replacement shops, the insurance rate is way higher than the regular rate, same as in any body shop work.

Speaking of windshields, I noticed our 2021 RX windshield has no tint anywhere, not even at the top. First "clear" windshield ever. Can anyone comment on this? I'm thinking this has something to do with the sensors/camera near or on the windshield. Yes we have wiper defrosters. BTW, I like not having tint when driving at night. Ray A.

Dealership glass is the best, but it is 3x as expensive as the OEM glass that most installers carry. Note that OEM is not the same as the glass that you get from Lexus or is installed at the factory. They are different.
I believe that when you order the windshield from a Lexus dealership, it should have the Lexus logo etched on the glass. By contrast, OEM will show the name of the glass manufacturer. Going with OEM glass isn't terrible. I would be more concerned that the installers exercise care during the installation process. You don't want them to scratch the frame or dashboard. Also, they need to seal it carefully. A poorly installed windshield can let wind noise and water in.
