RX windshield purgatory
If you get a big chip. Just go get a new windshield
Thats ridiculous. The success rate of any rock chip repair on a windshield is far below100% and they will always tell you this. It is completely unrealistic to expect a 100% guarantee on a glass repair. Hopefully the OP will now have a better understanding of windshield repairs. He could have had an aftermarket windshield installed by Safelite 8 months ago (probably the same day) and moved on with his life.

Anyway, I’d like to hope at least if the dealer does the install/calibrations, etc the Calibrations will be correct. Plus, they’d most likely back their work. Finally, if I decide to sell the car at any point, having an aftermarket glass, is a bit of a flaw(just my opinion).
The local dealer, as mentioned, does not do the actual installation, they farm it out to a 3rd party who comes on site. Third party does the physical installation, then dealer techs do the calibrations etc. I called said third party guy, and he says this is the only way on these models, he doesn’t do the calibrations etc. He said he does all local dealers exclusively. I tried going through the local Toyota dealership, same guy does their install.
Appreciate all the advice, was mainly just curious if there was any fellow RX folk facing same silly problem.

if you choose to play with insurance that’s on you. I personally prefer self insure for glass, with a minimum interaction with an aggravating insurance company. This is the first time I’ve run into this non-sense. In a normal windshield replacement scenario, I have a local guy who has been replacing all my glass for many years.

Your sensors will need re-calibration after the windshield replacement. Can your “local guy” do that?

This thread is a comedy of errors by the OP. It isn't rocket science to get a windshield replaced and it will most likely happen repeatedly for most of us.

For me it has required a simple 3 min phone call to my insurance company to file a windshield claim and a 1 min phone call to Safelite )or similar) along with a $50 deductible to get the windshield replaced in 1-2 days.

Ok Mr rocket scientist. Thanks for the kind words. Anyway, is it easier to file a claim through my insurance? Sure! Will they pay it? Again sure. So, I definitely understand how “easy” it is.
However, here’s something else I understand. Insurance companies absolutely LOVE any reason at all to raise premiums, due to people taking the “easy” road and filing claims all
the time. I’d much rather pay out of pocket $1500-2000 one time vs a premium increase of $250/month for the next forever.
