Hi all,
Does the cigarette lighter by the driver's side right footwell area have power even when the car is off? Or what about the USB port in the center arm rest?

The reason why I ask is because I purchased a dash camera, and would like it to only be ON when the car is ON (I don't care for the parking mode). I had previously thought the cigarette lighter/USB would all be off, but after plugging it into the cigarette lighter and leaving it there, I came back this morning to a dead battery.

I'm thinking the dead battery might have been a fluke (it was my 2015's original battery) but just wanted to be sure.

I'm fairly certain none of my the accessory power receptacles whether it be USB or lighter socket, are always on. At least for my 2010 RX, they all need to have either accessory power on or ignition on to energize those plugs. I believe this to be true for most Toyotas of this generation.. Only my GM truck powers the lighter sockets all the time.

With increasing consumer demand things can be different. For first gen RX I can certainly say that the lighter outlets are switched. As we have moved forward in time, the thing may be powered for couple of minutes after shutoff.

Just plug something and check and re-check after 2-3 minutes.

On my 2010 RX350 the power from the cigarette lighter appears to be off when the car is off - I have an iPhone cord plugged in to the outlet, emerging from the arm rest box, when the car is off, there is no power from the cord.

 

On my 2015 I plug a radar detector in to the lighter plug down by the floor under the center console and it shuts off with the car.
