My 201 RX 350 has just been deemed totaled by my insurance company because of water that leaked from blocked moonroof. I have 79,000 miles on it, and they are going to give me $16-17,000. dollars for it. I don't have the funds right now for a new car, and due to Covid, inventory is down 75% for used cars in all areas. I ofound a Lexus 2015 with same mileage of 79,000 for 22,000 dollars or a Rav-4 with 25,000 miles for 19,000 dollars (both are 2015) For the extra 3,000 dollars, is it worth sticking with the Lexus car with that kind of mileage? I drive in the city a lot , and the rav-4 drives well and is comfortable, but the engine was quite loud (not sue if that is the particular car or all Rav-4s. Wondering if anyone regretted losing the smoothness of Lexus and its comfort. Sorry for the length of my question!
Rav4 is certainly going to be the less expensive choice now and going forward. Both will likely retain value reasonably well and the Rav will be cheaper to operate. For the right choice, you'll need use The Force and trust your feelings.
Find a quiet place, close your eyes and imagine each vehicle. What will you feel each day when you see it. How will it make you feel driving it. What will you feel stepping on the gas, or taking a corner. Which will make you happy. If none of those helps, go with the Rav.
A 2015 for 22K is honestly not that bad. Look at the history on Lexus owner to see what kind of maintenance the Lexus has had over its lifetime. The mileage on the RAV4 is tempting and if you don’t mind loosing the creature habits could be something to think of if you do drive allot.
You can’t go by mileage alone look at the maintenance history/ accident history on both suvs. Take into account the upcoming services needed on both. If the RAV4 is in good shape with the low mileage you can always flip it when the market normalizes eventually. You will loose money on that no doubt but RAV4 will always be desirable especially with low mileage. Me personally I would go with the Lexus if it’s been well maintained but plan for extra expenses maintenance wise.
You need to drive the Rav4 for a day, I assume it is only a 4 cylinder. If you are use to the Lexus, it will be difficult to be happy with the Rav4.
The Toyota is a great car, but being use to the Lexus may bring some disappointments with the Rav4.
Seems a bit of overkill to scrap your car if it just has a bit of water damage to the carpet. Can you take it to a professional cleaner and detailer and get the carpet cleaned.
Insurance companies don’t like water damage. It can be very deceiving what seems like a wet carpet can end up being a soggy electrical system which would lead to major issues down the road that they would be on the hook for. During Sandy the water damage inspection was touch the carpet and if it was soggy total it out.

X2^^^^ As for the OP, Two different vehicles, as your use to the RX, you'll possibly be disappointed by the rav4......btw its a great idea to check the sunroof drains every year or so, specially if its not garaged. Easy enough to clean/wipe the sunroof channel.....

id go with the rav4. Less to go wrong, better fuel economy and much easier servicing
The RAV4 has a better infotainment system and is the same size inside as the RX. However the 4 cylinder is noisier, but you get better mileage. It also depends on the RAV4 trim level. A Limited model is very well appointed.
Own 2012 Rav 4 v6 and 2015 Rx 350 and they are different. Rx smooth as silk, little ride noise and a pleasure to drive. Gas mileage not great but ride quality is off the charts compared to Rav4. Rav is more of a mule, as I put the majority of miles on it. Ride not a nice, gas mileage 5-6 mpg better, still enjoy driving it. Have not driven Rav with a 4 vs 6, so can not comment. Depends on if how you use the car(miles per year, cost factor, desired ride quality). Drive both vehicles and decide which best fits your needs.
When my wife's '02 Highlander was totaled last year, she went to the local Toyota/Lexus dealer here in town. She first drove a brand new RAV 4, then walked over to the Lexus side and drove a 2012 RX 350. The RX came home that day.
The 2012 RAV4 was the last year of the 3rd generation. The 2015 RAV4 is the 4th generation and a much-improved vehicle. A buddy had a 2014 RAV4 Limited and it was as nice inside as the RX and the infotainment was 1,000 times better. The 4 cylinder was still noisier than the V6, but the ride was not bad.
