May be a dumb question on my part, but is it possible to keep this item out of sight??

Yes, and it is hidden.

"Hidden", though, does not prevent "discovery". Some high dollar toys only fit in certain spaces, and are therefore quite easily found by a knowledgeable thief who wants them.

A rather ridiculous illustration of such is that you cannot fit your favorite $600 Alexander McQueen Total Gold Skull umbrella inside your console or glove compartment! It will, though, hang nicely in the sling extensions of the rear hatch cover or even under the hatch cover in the cargo envelope net, but it can be easily found in either location.

I was only asking because it always amazes me the amount of vehicles I see in parking lots and on the street that have portable GPS, radar detectors etc visibly showing.. Or they leave the mounts showing which is just as bad since it leads one to believe the unit itself is in the car. I always remove the mounts and put them away, stinks we have to do these things but I would rather not bring attention to the car.

I was actually thinking about installing a shock sensor on one of my other cars and may look into what vlad_a posted as well.

Excellent point about removing any evidence of toys, but cleaning up suction cup marks from the windshield presents a huge inconvenience effort to that approach.

I see the same, and this may be the examples being set for chosing which cars to target
