I just realized what a big empty space the RX has behind the rear axle. Has anybody tried to mount the spare tire there - like the 4runner? I think that would open quite some space in the trunk where the spare tire is living now.
I do not think that would be practical or possible. I have looked under there installing my hitch and doubt there is room. Besides, you would have to fabricate a mount and way to lower it. I had that on my old Explorer and your tire & wheel take quite a beating down there, then the lowering mechanism can rust up.
That's where 2RX used to have its spare. I agree that current packaging is not most efficient, but it's nice that the spare is kept away from the elements. I'm glad we still have a spare, unlike some German alternatives out there.
Yes, the 2RX had a full spare underneath. There was a way to lower it inside the cargo area. Don't think that would be easy to replicate. And crawling underneath wouldn't be fun. The tire gets dirty like Clutchless said. Possibly you could have someone reconfigure the cargo area, personalizing it to fit your needs. It's something my installer did on my 330 to wire stereo equipment back there Looked great too.

The best part is it is easy to check the air in it. The Highlander mounts it underneath with the valve up. You have to lower the spare to check it. What a PIA!

Haven't checked the air in my Highlander spare in 11 years. Thanks for the reminder!

Congrats on going 11 years without having to change a tire!
