Use the mechanical key to separate the fob halves. Swapping out the old with new battery is straightforward. Battery is common and available in supermarkets and drug stores. If your car is a recent CPO, you are entitled to free batts from the dealer. If you are still getting the low fob batt. warning after changing the batts, something is wrong. You should not have to reset this announcement.

First I had a warning when the battery was going on the dash in red....I had to hold the fob next to the button to get the car to start.....I changed the battery and all seemed fine but then a warning came up on the nav screen to see the dealer to change ou tthe battery but I already done this and the remote works like it should.....The warning had a spot to click on saying not to shoe it again...That worked.
It sounds like they had a simple "scheduled maintenance" type alert setup. If so, it would have showed up at the date or mileage selected regardless of whether your fob battery was pooched or not. You can setup all kinds of alerts like this in the Nav system.
I had a similar issue. I replaced the battery in the key fob and then subsequently received intermittent warnings. I thought... that's odd. After a couple of weeks I figured out that it was my wife's fob that was triggering the message when she was in the car. DOH!!

I just changed them both after a year, in part to see if the remote range would improve (we did not see a dramatic difference), and will probably continue the annual program just to avoid any problems.

2.5 year on original batteries - no problem, no decrease in remote range.
My Q5 remotes are 5y. o. and are on original batteries. It is not about money, but why waste the batteries?
Because if your out and about and can't start your car what do you do? For a 4 dollar battery every 15000 miles or one year is better than walking. I also keep one in the glove box. I do this in our RDX as well and have shown my wife how easy it is to change them out, just in case.

I agree it can save a lot of annoyance just to replace the battery at regular intervals, but just FYI, you don't have to walk just because the battery dies. The fob can be recognized even when the battery is dead by holding it against the power button for a few seconds. It's a bit of a PITA but a lot less so than walking...
Something to consider if you place two or more fobs on the same counter or same pocket or same purse routinely. They are tiny radios and constantly transmitting and receiving. It won't hurt them but doing this repeatedly will decrease your batteries at a much higher rate as their constantly talking to one another by trying to communicate and failing.
I keep mine at least 10 feet or more apart as a general rule.
