Tablet Rear Seat Entertainment Solution
Tablets are not new and certainly some people have employed a solution to this already. So this is not to re-invent the wheel, but to post the solution that works for me to help anyone who may not know how to move from DVDs to a Tablet movie-viewing solution. It turns out it is VERY easy and requires little time.
Materials:
1. DVDs
2. DVD backup/converting software
3. Tablet
4. Tablet holder
1. DVDs: Get your kids' favorite DVDs ready for the next step
2. DVD backup/converting software: $30 (via the trial software, obtained from download.com), or $40 if purchased directly from the vendor. This software converts the DVD into a digital file.
3. Tablet: I tested this on a 7" Playbook with plans to purchase a Windows Surface tablet so I can use it as a tablet/laptop in between family car trips. Very easy to transfer the MPEG-4 movie files to the Playbook and I would expect a similar process for other tablets, or non-Apple tablets, connect via a USB cable would do the trick. From my PC where the movie files have been created, open an explorer or browser window and in the address bar \\Tablet's IP address, for example \\192.168.1.100, then simply copy/paste the files into the Video directory of the Playbook.
With a battery efficient tablet, you may not even need to charge the tablet during your car trip and bring in power cables. Second, no need for any audio cables as well since all you need to do is set up Bluetooth to accept the connection between the tablet and the RX's BT streaming audio input.
4. Tablet holder: ~$35. Amzer AMZ93344 Deluxe Headrest Mount for Universal Tablet. The rod is entirely aluminum (instead of plastic) which adds to the durability, strength and light weight of this mount while it is also so easy to install and remove.
Here's the video to show how easy it sets up and removes. It's for an Arkon brand which appears to be an identical re-branded version.
