Body Side Moldings (merged threads)

Thank you, I did see that post and tried 28.5” from the floor. I guess I could try a few inches down and then see how they look. Looking at a lot of photos and trying to judge where a reference point would be.

My measurement was based on how it was installed on my RX, so use that as point of reference.
Going beyond that, you need to think of the function ..
If your are trying to protect 'your rx' from a vertical (tall enough object) then stick the protection on the most extended part of the door.
If it is from other doors, then you need to place it at the widest part of the other vehicle. [which cars are parked in your garage].
Rest us esthetics.

Thank you for that advise.
I have a question about the height that was used on your vehicle. Was that height used for both ends?
More or less a Straight line was use at 28.5?

Ignoring the taper the strip is horizontal. [note 450H]

I'm a retired engineer, so will try to measure and describe to you.
My wife's 2015 RX350 has factory-installed body side "moldings". And BTW, they have already paid for themselves many times over.
Nothing is square on the sides of these machines, and measurements to the floor will vary.
The moldings taper at the back and front ends, so I'm going to give you 4 dimensions with a 1/2" wide cheap metal measuring tape, with it hooked just over the inside top edge of the bottom SS door window frames, on each door for the two body side molding pieces on a side.
There are 4 of these vertical dimensions (90° from the garage floor plane) for the two moldings (2 dimensions for each door) on each side, and I will list them from back to front.
For the back door molding, the vertical dimension down to the center of the molding in back are 19 7/8" and on the forward end, from the forward end of that window bottom SS is 20-5/32"
Then for the front door molding, those vertical dimensions are 20-5/32" to the top of the molding at the back end, and 19-3/4" to the front center point of the molding on the front door.
Stay hooked across the stainless steel window trims, for both back door and front door measurements. And keep your tape measure vertical

I like that approach for measuring and makes sense. I will try this method tomorrow and see how they look.
Today I laid them on the dining room table and used a method of measuring from the Black Moldings below the doors. The tapered chrome trim measurement had to tweaked a few times.
I will update my results tomorrow.
Thank you so much for your help.

While not the answer to your question (I'm returning from FL - but know that the measurements you need come with the BSM) here's how I ensured that mine was straight ( note the string between two wooden blocks stuck on with double sided tape):
What is not shown are the wooden jigs (guides) that I stuck on the car prior to applying the BSMs. I literally laid the molding onto the wooden guides (same as shown holding the string) while pushing the molding onto the very wax-free paint. There is no second chance (if the paint is properly prepared) at positioning the molding.
IIRC, the measurement is to the top of the black plastic rocker covers (as opposed to the ground); and the kicker is that the moldings are shaped (pointed) - which means accounting for the fatter/wider middle at the door opening - hence the string.
This set cost me about about four hours of my life; and I think I could do it again in an hour.
And yes, I chose Silver to go on the Gray (to match the Thule).

It will greatly help reduce door dings, but no side molding strips can prevent ALL door dings because there are just too many variances in the height and shape of the millions of door edges out there, and too many careless idiots in parking lots who shove their doors wide open with no regard to other peoples' property.. The only true way to prevent all door dings is to always park far, far away from all other vehicles.

Thank Raleigh!
I am planning to add the chome molding in my rx 350.
I am planning to buy this product: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000...%2315392%23918
My goal is to avoid the sedan since most of the cars in the city are sedan, I understand that it won't avoid the suv/big truck but better than (as you mentioned). I am thinking this molding will add 1 inch to the current default rubber molding I have in the bottom of my side door panel. do you think this will work?
Many many thanks for your reply.
cheers,
Dey
