Default Change oil filter only?

Hi all, I changed my RX oil yesterday, but didn't have the tool to open the filter housing. Now I have the tool.
Can I just replace the filter only? will all the oil drain out when I take out the filter?
btw, what brand of filter do you guys use? (I only change twice a year, so don't mind to pay little extra for good one).

Thanks.

Typically you either change the oil or the oil with filter. I always changed the oil and filter.
I'm fairly sure if you do the filter only you will have a mess on your hands.
I would drive for another 5K miles and change both then.

P.S.
Just bought Bosch filter at AutoZone. Wanted to get Mobile 1, but neither AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts had it.
Oil change is planned for tomorrow.

You just lose the half a quart that is in the filter; so you can do that and buy a quart and top it off after driving it a little; these little filters don't hold much oil and have NO access to the oil pan so don't worry!! Some people change filters every 1000 miles in dusty areas because the additives in the oil are still good so just the dirt and grime need to be removed!!

Since you already changed the oil just leave the filter for now and just change both after 5k. Btw since we are speaking of oil, how many quarts do yall put in? I was told it needs to be 6.5 quarts. is that correct? I know our Rx's require oil changes every 10k but i play it safe by having both my oil and filter changed every 7,500 miles. I drive over a 100 miles a day so the thought of waiting till 10k scares me. I also bring my own oil Mobile 1 Full Synthetic 0w-20 and just buy the filter from the Toyota dealership where i go to get my oil changes. They charge me $15 for labor and 3.90 for a filter. so it ends up costing me like 22 bucks. I also pay like $37 for 6 quarts of oil that i buy from walmart. So total is usually the same as what most Lexus dealerships charge but i know what oil was put in and they let me stand there as they perform everything so that gives me peace of mind.

How often do you change your oil?

Don't worry too much. Leave the filter in until your next oil change.

First oil change at Lexus at 10k miles, right now at 15k miles..... I think it should be okay for another 5k miles then change them both at once. I just put in Mobil 1 synthetic, so 5k is little early.

I usually do oil change myself as I know exactly what I put in.

I agree 5k is too early to change your M1 out. Changing perfectly good synthetic oil early is a waste of money and oil! It serves no benefit changing oil early. Used oil analysis' have confirmed that.

As for the filter, you won't have any issues stretching it out to 2 OCIs.

The manual states 6.4 qts. I always put in that amount +/- a little bit.

You are getting a good deal from your dealership, especially on the filter, so I would stick with them until they decide to raise the prices on you

I encourage you to check out bobistheoilguy.com. You may want to rethink changing out your oil early. The M1 is more than capable of handling a 10k OCI.
