I have a 2013 RX350 on order and am reading with interest the thread on extended warranties. I tend to think that since most everything is controlled by the on screen navigation system, that should something stop working it could be costly to repair (maybe worth the extended warranty)?
Has anyone experienced a failure with these computer display control systems and if so what did it cost for repair. At $75-100 an hour just the labor alone to tear up the dash could be a killer???
We're seeing some failures in 2nd gen nav systems now. Not a lot but enough to worry about. Straight dealer 'fix', new head unit, labor, etc has been quoted at 10,000. To my knowledge there have not been any complete failures, just various sub systems fail. Some of the failures can be attributed to owners poking around in the service menus so try to avoid trying to 'improve' your system.
The 2nd gen cars are aging, an early '04 is actually around 10 years old. I don't know how long you plan to keep your car but you should have some years of worry free driving.
2106, congrats on your '13 RX. I had the screen, no nav back then, fail on the 300. I could push the climate control buttons but didn't know what I was doing. It was a fun trip to the dealer in the pouring rain with the windshield fogging up Fortunately the replacement was covered under the basic warranty. IIRC the cost was somewhere around $1,500-2,000. No doubt it'll be much more on the 3rd gen. I've had extended warranties on all of my RXs and they paid for themselves with one repair. But you don't have to get it when you take delivery. You can purchase it before the basic warranty expires, albeit at a higher price.
