Default 6.5 qts too much?

Shortly after the 10k mile complementary dealer service, I noticed the oil dipstick read ~1 qt overfill. I drove my 2010 RX for another 5k miles and diy oil change using 6.5 qts Toyota 0w20 oil & OEM filter. The dipstick read the same level (~1 qt overfill).

Anybody have any experience(s)?

Don

this is why for decades I did my own oil changes on 3 cars we always had at any given time, over the past 4 decades. I was fanatical. I would even start my engine while the drain pug was open to burp the last 2/3 of a quart of the dirty oil out, and that does not hurt an engine that is fully lubricated before the initial drain. The worst start for an engine is after it sat for several days and very little oil is still clinging to the cylinder walls and various bearing journals. I am new to the Gen 3 RX world so cannot say what the tolerances are. But the way I do my oil changes, I always end up with the oil level being very close to the full mark. They might know something we do not know. Then again, you might have found a shot that lets a sloppy tech do the oil changes. Most mfrs warn against overfilling, because of the risk of foaming causing poor oil circulation and poor cooling due to excessive foaming. Foam does not lube or cool worth a crap. Did ytou see any evidence of foaming immediately after shut down and checking it? If you wait a few hours the oil level will even go up a bit beacuse of the viscosity of the oil requiring some time to fully drain down into the oil pan. But if you measured high right away, that would be a concern to me if I am in your shoes... I would go ask somebody serious at that shop, and hopefully you do not get somebody that knows less about it than your kids. They are out there and need to be called to task. Brainstorm: if you call Lexus and have them tow it in because of this issue, that would get every Lexus VIP's attention. Heads would roll. That might be the best way to address this issue if it happens again! JMHO...

Check out: http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...heck-tool.html

I've had the same problem, put in exactly 6.5 qts US and get an oil smear about 1 inch above the max line. Freaked me out. Did some digging and from what people were saying - the viscosity of Synthetic oil is different and therefore making it stick to the dipstick differently.

The attached link shows a fool-proof method of knowing exactly how much oil is in your engine (if done correctly).

Let me know what you've come across!

Should be fine if properly drained from oil filter and drain plug. The exact amount is actually 6.4 qts.

What an increadibly simple and intuitive solution. I have noticed the same sort of things with some of my vehicles that they dont read correctly on the dipstick.

Because the vinyl tubing is spooled it will curl at the bottom and may go deeper or NOT so deep into the oil;;;not a good system....I have tried it; I only use my spool of tubing for sucking out overfills!!!! You can suck out quite a bit before it gets anywhere near your mouth;;;!!

If it were rigid like a dipstick, it would work!!!

I've ordered the test kit to have my oil analyzed and that tube might just be the trick I need to get 3 oz out. Thanks for the heads up. What size tubing did you use?

BTW, I don't have any problem reading my dip stick, maybe because I check it when the oil is cool, but it does show the level. And I always use the 0w5w oil.
