Default loud exhaust noise from RX

Hi, has anyone tried to replace the muffler or exhaust to make it a bit quieter. Like many...at speed the car is quiet but on the highway at 110/120 km/hr there is constant booming...at 100 it is quiet....around town when accelerating and in the range of 1800-2300 rpm it is loud but is quiet after that...sounds like a common complaint but just wondering if anyone has tried to fix it...without sound deadening material..

I already spent enough money purchasing this vehicle......not about to spend more money replacing OEM parts working as designed.......rather save that money to purchase gas.....

Unfortunately I believe any replacement exhaust will either be as loud (I do not have this issue) or louder.

Did you not test drive this car to make sure it was not too loud before you got it?

I have played with the resonators on the intake side of the engine. The one that is between the air filter and the engine that faces the firewall is the one I played with most. It did alter the sound but I wasn't sure if it was worth the mod. I had to remove it, block it off, then re-install it. I was afraid if I had a problem with the engine and Lexus discovered it that they would not honor the warranty.

I do agree the exhaust note is louder than I care for and I did know this going in. The RX has a lot of other features that make up for it. I will be test driving the 2013 when they arrive, maybe time to trade.

Um....is this really a common problem? I can hear it during acceleration but not to where it is annoying. Doesn't all exhaust create a sound? If it's a booming sound like the OP said, then it's an isolated problem.

I posted similar complaint a month ago. Got few ideas of installing sound deadening material, and some other nice comments from sympathetic drivers. But for some reason you, one other , and i are the only ones who have this complaint. It is definitely annoying, especially when i ride in competitions quiet vehicles.

Was told by lexus about a ceramic part in fuel system in motor and newly tuned exhaust for increased efficiency that may explain loudness. They did it for a good reason i guess so i will live with it.

Will listen more carefully test driving next vehicle, but i will be 5-10 yrs older and hearing isn't that good now so even a race car will sound quiet by then.

Like mentioned above, a resonator will work on reducing the exhaust note - http://auto.howstuffworks.com/muffler4.htm

Though you will probably lose some low-end power with the more free-flowing exhaust.

yes it is interesting i have no problem with the noise while accelerating it is loud but sporty and dies out right away at speed..., it is just between 110 km/hr and 120 km/hr in 6th gear...with cruise on, any slight increase in speed (say slight hill) causes the annoying exhaust sound/hum....tonight i tried it in 5th gear at the same speeds and no loud hum...if i do 100 km/hr it in 6th gear it is fine too...but living on Toronto i can't survive on the highways at 100 km/hr....anyway i can easily ask the dealer about it...just thought i'd try the board first...

On a serious note what model Lexus are we talking about?
It can't be a RX because mine is the quietest RX I've owned between the three gens.

I am pretty heavy into Corvettes and because they are Fiberglass and plastic the exhaust noise and heat become an issue with after market mufflers and complete systems.
Some people even heard a drone type noise at highway speeds, coming up through the gears or decelerating the noise when away but hit the sweet spot on the highway and it was there loud and clear.
The cure,.............Over the winter one guy took off his system
and had it the pipes ceramic coated inside and out from the engine back to the mufflers, The noise was gone and it reduced inside compartment heat from the headers and pipe.

I don't know if this is the noise your talking about but this is one idea.
It costs about $250.00 and a few hours to get the exhaust down.

Don't know about anyone else but I think my wife's '11 RX350 exhaust note is welcomed and surprising for a Lexus. I like it as it adds some character to the car...kind of like a 1/2 scale Infiniti 3.5L V6 notes.

Very true. I don't even notice the wife's RX350 exhaust noise compared to my Infinity EX. I love the exhaust noise. Makes me feel like I own a performance vehicle, not some wimpy high mileage vehicle.
