Alexb, I am curious as to where you saw the extra 'goop' on your RX. Placement is everything.
I didn't compare the cars side by side, but from my recollection, the trunk floor area around the spare tire above the muffler had more "goop" (probably seam sealer or some type of caulking). Since I did notice a reduction in exhaust noise between the '11 and the '12, I figured this had something to do with it.

Ever since I saw your earlier comments about improving the sound system with Dynamat, I've had it on my wish list of things to do. The trunk floor is easy, and the door panel removal looks fairly straight forward, but how do you get the rear panels off around the upper suround speakers and the subwoofer?

Do you have to spend $80+ grand to have a quiet vehicle nowadays? Do we have to give these car companies a huge profit margin? I say we should file a complaint for false advertisement (that the RX is a quiet vehicle).
i guess i can answer that for you.
the " quietness" in my Range Rover and our 2011 RX 350 is comparable..although sometimes i do feel that the RX 350 is Quieter.
Reliability wise, i would stick with the Lexus, or even a plain Toyota ( we have a 2009 Camry SE and a 2011 Prius IV).

in your case, i would think the 450h would better suit your needs than the 350.

I did the entire bottom of the RX. I went around the wheel wells and the spare tire area. That achieved the best bass response as I did pull the sub and go around it and behind it. I did not go up around the satellite speakers, too much trouble. Not sure if removing the door panels is a good idea as you can end up with noises you didn't have before. I did however remove mine and insulated the doors sheet metal. I have a thread somewhere in here of when I did this. Need more info let me know.
