Default ipod connection-Scosche Passport

still looking for a way to hook up my OLD 20 gb ipod to my new RX450h---found this item on the internet---does any one have knowledge of it? It's supposed to allow charging for newer ipods--but I'm hoping it will allow the Nav system to recognize my older firewire/usb ipod connection.

Opinions??

thanks, Larry

Wow - I just posted about this on another forum!

Here's where you need to do some research:

The 2010 RX has the USB iPod hookup - which is the charging mechanism for the newer iPods.

The older iPod use a firewire system for charging and data transfer.

The main difference between the two is that the charging pins are moved from the inside to the outside depending on if it's USB or Firewire.

My understanding(and I'm no expert here in case you don't know) is that this adapter will take a NEWER iPod and reverse the pins that changed the charging from USB to firewire into a backward compatible plug.

So, on my Infiniti that has iPod capability with the older models, if I wanted to use a newer iPod I would use this adapter, plug it into my iPod and then plug the cable into the adapter. That would convert the newer USB Plug on the iPod into the older firewrire format.

I'm not sure if they have an adapter that does the opposite.

In the 2010 RX the issue is reversed. The charging and data go through a USB connection. You would have to find an adapter that would plug into an old iPod that would reverse the pins to allow it to connect to USB instead of the intended firewire.

If there is an adapter for that I'd love to know. I do know that there is one from the named manufacturer for the first scenario above.

Hope that wasn't too confusing!

Please post back if it works.

Jay

Thanks Jay...are you sure you're not an expert?

I'll have to quiz Apple a little deeper--it just seems that in this day and age and with all of the diverse electronic products out in the marketplace, there MUST be an adaptor that will do what I want (with out going the easy route and just buying a new ipod).
