Oh, no we don't, which is a part of the highway problem we have.
Our gas taxes are just about the lowest in the world, and they support a federal highway system built intentionally to lower standards than the autobahn (autobahn pavement is much thicker and thus requires much less maintenance).
I would gladly pay a higher gas tax if the interstates were up to autobahn standards.

I agree completely! And we hand out driver's licenses like they are rights instead of privileges. The most I have had to do to renew my driver's license since I was sixteen is identify a few road signs before being pushed out the door. No wonder so many people don't know what the left lane is for.

I remember in Mexico City, that once you turned 18, all you need to do was show some ID and pay about $45 USD and you had a driver's license.
