Hi. In regards to tailgate opening, I havent figured out anything other than probably needing a new release button on the hatch.
Only the key fob or interior button opens the tailgate. The button inside the glove box to disable the tailgate is not depressed either.
I have had a 2011 and 2010 RX and both have had this problem with the rear tail gate release button.
I have heard there were problems with using the button to auto lift but I am not concerned with that.
Just want to manually open the tailgate without the key fob.
Any suggestions beyond just replacing the release? Thanks
I am unclear with regard to what it is you have problems with that may be broken on your rear hatch.
You state the hatch opens with the motor while using the fob or dash button.
It is normal on those to have to lift the rear hatch manually when depressing the button on the rear hatch.
Have you tested it with the glove box button in both positions?
Of course on a 15 year old vehicle it may be time to replace the rear hatch struts.
Sorry for the confusion. I meant to say I can not manually open the rear hatch with the button on the tailgate.
Depressing the button on the rear hatch doesnt do anything.
Only way for me to open the rear hatch is with the key fob or dash button.
And yes I have tried both positions in the glove box.
I would first remove the interior trim on the rear hatch and inspect the button mechanism to see if something became detached. You need to know what may be broken or fell apart before buying parts and you need to know what parts to buy. The interior trim piece should be able to be pulled off or pried with a big flat screwdriver around the lower edge to get at the latch area, but there may be a few hidden screws etc to remove. I have not examined it in some time. I know on my Sienna I just pulled it open recently to change a light bulb.
This happened years ago on my 1995 Ford Explorer. The release lever fell off of the rear hatch handle inside the hatch. I removed the interior trim and reattached it and it was fine after that.
